Doesn't sinterklaas have a friend helping him and the friend is African? In Switzerland there's the Nikolaus (the guy this story originates from in Turkey 350BC) and der Weihnachtsman which translates into "The Christmas Man"

I'm pretty sure Zwarte means Black in Dutch (in the Swiss dialect of German that I speak it's Schwarze or Schwarzer (male and female)) and looking at pictures, that description fits.

The previous year, I saw "Stroopwafel Piet" and "Regenboog Piet"(Rainbow Piet). Zwarte Piet is so much better than these spin-offs
