I find that "New Policy in Cairo," the forth mission of 'Expedition to Egypt' is a great venue for the training. Well, your generals will eventually reach max XP anyway but if you want to get him a quick boost, here is a way
In this setting, waves of weak enemies are scripted to attack Alexandria so what you need to do is to put the general you want to train there and make sure that he survives. The enemies are very weak with about 80HP which can be easily one-shot if your general is strong. Moreover, each enemy yields 10XP which is higher than normal. You can just ignore all of the winning conditions for this mission.
So this is how I did. I put Karl on rifleman there and also princess Victoria in the city to keep his HP up. Notice that I also place other units in positions such that attacking enemies will be flanked, thus, have damage reduced. You can also use other units to limit the number of enemies to attack Alexandria if you feel that your general is not strong enough.
Note: this is simple for an infantry or cavalry general. But if you want to train your artillery general, you need to build a factory and train heavy artillery which will take 2 rounds. Thus this method is a bit less effective for an artillery general but still decent.
These are the pictures of Karl before and after one round. Since there is nothing much to do except for letting enemies attack you so I can do it very quick, just click end turn and fast forward and repeat. So basically I can earn about 300-400 XP in a couple of minutes!!! And if you have the +50%XP book then it will be really fast.
Note: You do not need both Ambulance and Tent. Just a Tent is fine. Actually, I have done this with neither of them.
Note2: If you feel lucky, you can let your general hold Napoleonic Code for extra medal.
