While watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I noticed some interesting human soldiers fighting n the side of Mordor. During the trilogy, they appear two times:
first, in the Two Towers, when they enter the Black Gate;

second time is in a scene from Return of the King, after the gates of Minas Tirith are broken by the giant battering ram (Grond), somewhere on far background behind the orcs.

My thought was they were the Easterlings of Rhûn. These soldiers, in their golden armour, get a large role in the books as allies of Mordor, while in the movies, they get little screen time.
But, a few days ago, someone said that these are in fact soldiers of Hard, using as argument that they were carrying a red flag with a snake on, similar to the classic Haradrim flag, and were coming from South (according to Frodo and Sam's point of view, and position of the Black Gate), instead of North. After a bit of research, in that scene was used indeed a flag with a snake, but it was different to the classic Haradrim one.
I always associated the Haradrim as the guys with Arab-style outfits and the Oliphants, while the soldiers of Rhûn had that kind of golden armour,and looked more professional.

In the end, what army was that at the Black Gate and Minas Tirith? Who was right?
