Here, I would like everyone to post what you believe are good paths when buying gens (NO IAPs). For example, if you want an arty-oriented starting line-up, get Mahmud II or Alexander, then get the other gen. OR if you want to have an cav-oriented starting line-up, go for Murat/Dabrowski/Davout, etc.
For me, I just bought Mahmud II as, coincidentally, my 2nd gen so I can't say much.

Just get the best generals that have been accepted in the forum. For Cav generals, first get Murat, after that you may choose between Davout/Ney/Dombrowski. For Infantry, just get Karl+Massena, after that you may get the 3rd Inf general (Washington/Barclay/Lannes/Suvorov). Not much to say about Art gen & Admiral coz we all know that Nelson & Alexander/Mahmud the choice here.
I should wait for the update if I were you, the princesses goin to join the battlefield.

I would say this plan might work: Stage 1. Massena and Barclay (some upgrades). Stage 2. Ney (some upgrades). Stage 3. Alexander (some upgrades) It should be enough to complete first part of the game and some challenges and to unlock some 50% discounts. Stage 4. Unlock 50% discount for John and buy him or buy Mahmud II. Stage 5. First expensive general Murat (some upgrades). Stage 6. Dabrowski (some upgrades) Stage 7. Karl (some upgrades) Stage 8. It is time to complete the game. Stage 9. More upgrades. Stage 10. It is time to beat some records. andrei, stoic be prepared and tremble because I'm coming!!! Something like that

Stage 11: Realise that buying IAP generals doesn’t make you a God in conquests

Stage 11: Realise that buying IAP generals doesn’t make you a God in conquests Well, Blucher is very good and I wouldn't refuse to have Napoleon either. But the request was to discuss all but IAP generals. And I personally prefer to operate with scarce resources (as many of us forced to do in RL )

stoic That’s good enough for finishing up campaigns and conquests. But in challenges sometimes they will ban a kind of general. All four kinds of bans are witnessed in Hundred Days’ War. If you have too many infantry and cavalry generals, it will end up finishing the challenges by using 4/5 generals to get through a hard challenges with all kinds of weird restrictions.

So my guess for the final lineup: Karl + Massena + Murat + Dabrowski/Lan + 2 out of Sophia/John/Alex/Mahmud/Maria + Nelson + Sakurako/Treville. Louise can be one of these 8, but we have no idea about her skills.

Would it be wiser to get Washington instead as he has formation master and plain fighting on barclay? Or would it be smarter to purchase barclay instead?

If you have too many infantry and cavalry generals, it will end up finishing the challenges by using 4/5 generals to get through a hard challenges with all kinds of weird restrictions. I completed all challenges with 3 stars though I was forced to rebuild my team a bit to receive 3 stars for 3 missions. I had Suvorov-Barclay-Massena-Lannes Alexander-John This team was capable to complete all "100 days' war" and "Spanish war" missions with 3 stars except for 3 missions: Support Spain Vitoria Waterloo In Vitoria we have ban on Inf generals and are alowed to use only 5 to receive 3 stars... So in my recommended version these will be Murat-Dabrowski-Ney Alexander- John I the battle of Waterloo we have a ban on Inf generals again but allowed to use 7 generals in total. However, I tried and completed it with only 5 generals. Therefore Murat-Dabrowski-Ney Alexander- John can do it. And in "Support Spain" we don't have band at all and are allowed to use 8 generals. So the only one possible problem with my suggested team is "the battle of Waterloo". But it is possible to complete this mission with 5 generals... 3 Inf generals 3 Cav generals 2 Art generals should be good enough in all situations...

Louise can be one of these 8, but we have no idea about her skills. I don't know about 2 Admirals. Really I didn't ever need one to complete all campaigns and challenges. It's good to have one for conquest competition but even here it is optional, imo...

Yeah... that’s why I’m thinking about a 2-2-2-2 lineup instead of 3-3-2 and 4-2-2 so that we will have at least 6 officers to use no matter which kind of general it bans...
