So I completed the Final Battle today.

Only 2* and I'm still 42 short of 5* in every campaign, but considering how much upgrading I'd still need to do to achieve that it's most likely that I'll get a new phone before that happens. Still a win is a win, and you never know...

Pics to follow, just to show it's possible without IAPs and the very best generals/princesses.
