I began my second run yesterday and I was able to get as far as Rise of Rome - Uprising campaign & 17 cities in Empire within a few hours.
This has got me 5 daily missions @ 10 medals each, so 100 medals per day.
So my tips are get to 10 & then 15 cities in Empire mode asap, and I also think it's worthwhile buying at least 1 coin general (I bought 2) so you have a minimum of 6 in total when you get Huo in order to do 2 daily missions at once and some of the battles etc. at this stage have 6 slots.
I also bought a couple of pairs of boots largely because I'm impatient and wanted to get 3 stars first time round in as many as possible.
This seems like a pretty solid basis to proceed from to me, feel free to add your own below or refute if you disagree with anything.
