What's the difference? Is there one? It's not massively important, just a curiosity, but the "+" makes it look like Ambush does more harm than good!

Ambush gives you +50% attack bonus to archers - you can see this in "Cantar de Mio Cid" (Charlemagne fifth campaign).
El Cid just deals great damage to archers.
Shield is the opposite: 50% less damage from archers - Saladin on level 6 is an example.

El cid sadly lacks braveness and he is the only general with that skill. A waste if you ask me

There are some amazing cheap cavarly generals though. Like Batu Khan and Hannibal have plunder, and Batu has leadership while Hannibal has Braveness. El cid is just meh. I mean what good is having 50% extra archer damage if attacking one halfs your health bar.

I know. Hannibal is impossible to not get and batu khan is great.
