Hello, since there are several Dutch speaking people on the forums I would like to introduce Dutch. I was inspired by The Last Stand Soldier and his Polish lessons. First let's see how to pronounce the letters: this video isn't mine but it gives you a good look how to pronounce the alphabet. How to formal-informal: Formal you (against people that are older, you do not know, your boss, etc.) = u Informal you ( only against friends, people you know for a while, kids)= je/jij Hi! - Hoi! Good morning! - Goedemorgen! Good evening! - Goedenavond! Welcome! (to greet someone) - Welkom! How are you? - Hoe gaat het met je? I'm fine, thanks! - Het gaat goed met me, dank je! And you? - En met jou? Good/ So-So.- Goed / Zo-zo Thank you (very much)! - Dank je / Bedankt (thank you very much= Heel erg bedankt) You're welcome! (for "thank you") - Graag gedaan. I missed you so much! - Ik heb je zo erg gemist. Good evening! - Goedenavond Good night! - Goedenacht! See you later! = Ik zie je later nog ! Good bye! Goeiedag nog! Asking for Help and Directions I'm lost Ik ben de weg kwijt Can I help you? Kan ik je helpen? Can you help me? Kan je me helpen? Where is the (...)? Waar is de (....)? Go straight! then turn left/ right! Rechtdoor gaan, dan naar links /rechts. I'm looking for john. Ik ben op zoek naar John. One moment please! Een ogenblik alstublieft. Hold on please! (phone) Blijf even aan de lijn alstublieft. How much is this? Hoeveel kost dit? Excuse me ...! (to ask for something) Mag ik even wat vragen? Excuse me! ( to pass by) Excusee mij! Come with me! Kom met me mee!

Finally we can teach Dutch to you! Mind you, your lives are worthless if you have never learned the great language of the Netherlands/Belgium!

Part II Do and don't in the Netherlands DO - Try and speak Dutch to them (do not speak German)
- Try their candy and other sweets
- Say you prefer Dutch licorice more than English
- Travel by bike IF YOU KNOW THE DUTCH RULES
- Know something about the Dutch history
- Be alert for pickpockets, sure we'll take your money.
DON'T - Speak German, since Fall Gelb we do not like the Germans that much
- Think the Netherlands is a weed country since the legal amount of marijuana you can carry is 15 times as less as in DC. (see picture)
- Think the Dutch citizens live in windmills, wear clogs and have cows as pet since that is not true at all
- Travel by bike if you do not know the DUTCH way of cycling (many differences like: we have our own ways for cyclists)
- Wait for the Traffic lights if you can pretend you are from Amsterdam [can cause serious injury or death]
- Walk on the bike lanes, if you hear a "cling, cling" or hear someone shouting "LET OP" (Dutch for Watch Out) from behind you jump real quick
or you may get mowed down by a cyclist. They do not stop for way to see and get around. Watch out for the dreaded tram tracks in cities.
- Think Flemish people and Dutch people like each other. Flemish people like to call themselves Dutch but if they try in the Netherlands they will be lynched publicly without the police interfering
- Call the country Holland since you will be lynched publicly without the police interfering
- Go into a coffeeshop expecting to get coffee

DO Adress everyone with "u"and throw as much as possible "mijnheer" and "mevrouw" in a sentence Indeed, try to speak Dutch. Do not be offended when people laugh at you. Dutch isn't very easy DON'T In Amsterdam, pedestrians are very suicidal and will Always try to get in front of your car when you're driving. Don't imitate them. Only people from Amsterdam have that special power.
