So, it's my 3rd time writing about help here in the past couple of days but it looks like coming back to the game after 1 year of not playing it (or any other ET games really) left its toll on my abilities in regards to this game.
Playing challenge conquest mode really created me a problem or two in terms of getting to the bit of what it takes to deal with some countries.
For example, my first conquest attempt was with USSR. I got to Berlin, even Amsterdam/Brussels, but it all fell apart in a couple of turns and it seems to be a rule in conquests in which I have to face big force on land with a lot of gens & elite forces right away. I even gained semi-control of Manchuria with crappy units you get at the start and, if I had more resources to allocate to Eastern Front I would definitely take over Japan, but all of my economy was pointed towards Western front. Problem lies in the fact that, in Europe, enemy generals make my lead troops very weak in a move or two. Rokossovsky is bombed to the pieces even before he comes from Moscow to engage with Germans in Poland. Katukov's morale goes down to the point he is unusable (can't fire & move) in one turn and there is no generals around him that have rumour skill. How does that even happen? After generals you are given and the ones you recruited die and you succesfully eliminated Manstein, Guderian, Rommel, Kluge, Leeb there is nothing left of your army. Even if your economy improved significantly, you have to spend it all on putting troops in cities surrounded by random German generals in order to save the city, but it comes to a point where they take the city and get to another. Their economy is shred to pieces, but they have a strong army that will eventually plow through what's left of yours. After the momentum shifts, you just know you are done. Same thing happened to me with Germans against Soviets: despite having amazing generals at your disposal, after you gain a lot of land very quickly and defeat main enemy generals, they just spam new generals on elite forces in remaining cities and they slowly start getting their land back. Even after you gain the big five (Leningrad, Stalingrad, Moscow, Kiev, Minsk) there is no way to advance more. There is nothing left of your army and you are in for a painful conquest that you can win, but it would take 50-60 turns or more which is outrageous. After that, I tried USA, UK, Japan, Italy to avoid them at the start or simply have my allies carry the weight of the battle (with Italy, Germans plow through Soviets and leave you empty cities that you take like a leech without killing single Soviet unit) and I have done this with relative ease. After a few easy conquests, I decided to try France. It started really well, taking Bangkok in the Malay Arch, defeating Spain in max 4 moves and defeating Italian spam and gaining full control over Africa I thought I am definitely winning this one. Even easily defeated Rommel who tried to grab Paris quickly, Leeb & Kluge too, but that was it from me. In the East, took two smaller cities from Japs in mainland China, but that was it. Held them with light infantry, but couldn't afford to spend more in the East which would be enough to retreat Japs to mainland. In the West, Germans took Brussels and Amsterdam and it was the end for me. When the large spam came which had maybe 6-7 random overpowered German tanks&arty, I was doomed. Italians weren't taking a lot of my resources and I would've defeated them if I had the neccessary cash to force the defeat (smaller cities and ports only left, with control over Rome, Napoli, Milano, Belgrade). With only Germany left to take upon, I lost. They took Paris and everything else was going to be defeated soon and it was pointless to continue. You just can't stop that kind of spam with half of your generals dead and half soon to be dead. It doesn't help that UK as the only strong ally near you is a strong force in Africa, but can't land a single unit on mainland Europe. Worst allies, you are getting molested by German generals while Monty & co don't even try to cross the channel.
I have fully upgraded tech, 11 generals [Leeb, Roko (rmr3), Guderian (rmr5, pl5), Rommel(rmr5, pl5), Nimitz(rmr3), Nagumo, Konev, Dowding, Runstedt, Pavlov & Horton], some low end ribbons and T-44 & base arty elite force unlocked. I have done at least 150 conquests in WC4, but I just can't seem to grasp what do I have to do to defeat these countries in challenge mode. My tech & gens should be enough to win these with ease, but I am clearly doing something wrong.
Without mastering these, I do not even want to attempt 1943.
Where might I be in the wrong, is it the particular strategy I go for or does my approach in general suck here?
Thank you all in advance, any kind of feedback is welcome!
