In this thread we are going to summarize some basic tactics for the Hold the Ground gamemode. So how do you approach any Hold the Ground lvl? Can you give newer members some advice on what units to deploy, their positioning, on how to use their generals or on any other subject relateable to this gamemode? Please state any feedback below!

Main thing I would say is that you don’t want to just sit back and defend. You are usually better off taking the fight to the enemy and forcing them back. I found the challenges in WC4 to be generally much easier than WC3. It seemed like you needed specific wonders or perfect unit placement and a bit of luck to beat the toughest ones in WC3.

Also, you need to tackle these as you are ready for them. What I mean by that is you are going to have a really hard time beating the tougher challenges if you can’t fill all the general slots for the mission. On Hold the Ground, you want to send your generals on the attack and just leave weaker units behind to babysit the spots you have to hold.

On Hold the Ground, I'd recommend you try to block the enemy from coming onto land/approach by land IF possible.
Dmg dealt by land troops on transports is than than when they are on solid ground.

Make sure you know how much dmg your city & it's defending unit can take. Then use this to make a gamble on how to defend, who to defend crucial positions (this includes non target spots) & where to defend.
The enemy DEFINITELY has the power to paratroop into/onto yoir targets, so you need to be able to estimate the dmg you are going to & can take.

Hold the Ground I to IV are your warm up challenges.
I'd recommend beating them without gens to get a feel of how to play this series of Challenges without relying on some OP gen you bought.
By Challenge V, you'd have enough exp in playing Hold the Ground Challenges & can fare better even when facing more enemies by using past exp with troop deploymwnts to guide your actions. This allows you to see where your gens can truly come in in harder stages, instead of placing him in a powerful unit & attacking everyone randomly due to inexperience.

in my opinion in hold the ground you want to create a front line the enemy can't get through and slowly move back the more of your units die and you should never attack unless you are 100% certain they won't fight back
