Pretty much THE tankiest infantry unit in the game, having an enormous 360 HP and 39 def AND a permanent -25% damage reduction buff and it’s a grenadier! It’s a lv2 tech and actually fairly cost effective, and it picks up a great weapon type in WW1. Awesome.
The only reason I can’t give a 5/5 is because it has a tech requirement. By the time you have the tech you should probably be winning already. But it’s by far the best infantry unit in the game.

At least it's not that far into the tree, unlike the Guard Cavalry, which is stuck with muskets (sadly).

Bomb Dropping nullifies Muskets’ worst weakness, so it’s bad but not THAT bad.

Just as strong as they were in the prequel. You can almost research them right away and it’s cheaper than upgrading your city to Level 6 and gettting Armored Cars. 5/5.

Unfortunately for me i only realized their worth when i got desperate trying to pass the Battle of the Sambre (Campaign France last mission). Even then i managed it with just one round left. I'm surprised no one has yet to request a guide on it.

Old Guard seems to be the only really good infantry unit in the game.

Old Guard seems to be the only really good infantry unit in the game. I wouldn’t say that. Guard Grenadiers, Firebats, and Air Gun Soldiers have their uses too. Edit: oh right, «really» good. Guard Grenadiers probably are that.

No wait not ambush, like the artillery perk just with an inferior chance to trigger

And you can spawn it from Level III cities. I believe that if the tech requirement was I, it would be too overpowered. The low city requirement does help to make it feel overpowered, though...

I agree that this will never surpass Cavalry. But that doesn’t mean that this doesn’t deserve a 5/5, alongside Militia due to how good they are at holding cities. (If enemy AI knew how to use Militia effectively, each level would be far harder)
