Probably very simple answer but I can’t figure out how to move troops across water? Any help appreciated. I’m sure I’ll have other basic questions. I don’t know how to use commanders to enhance troops in battle...

I don’t know how to use commanders to enhance troops in battle... Welcome to the EFC! 1. IIRC, I think you just need to move them onto a coastal tile that borders the sea. Then, on the next turn, you can move them. 2. Each general has his own strengths. You can tell from how many stars he has for each unit type (inf, tank, arty and navy plus air force) as well as the number of movement stars he has. There are also his skills which usually should highlight a specific purpose. Eg. A tank gen should have Tide of Iron, Panzer Leader and so on. Simply tap on one of your units, press the button with an icon of a cap or a general's head and select the general you want to deploy. There should be a tutorial session on deploying gens.

I’ve tried that but no success. The tutorial says I need a Battleship but 1) I’m not advanced enough to buy one and 2) even when there is one I can’t move them off shore. In a campaign where I can move them, I’ve noticed they start with an anchor symbol on them but I don’t why or how to get that symbol.

I don't think you're playing WC3 or WC4 because you can march land troops into the sea directly in most Campaigns just by letting them wait on a coastal tile before tapping on a sea tile. european-war-4.boards.net/thread/7699/on-using-screenshotsCan you send a screenshot of how it looks like?
You can see in the top left that as long as your unit borders a sea tile, you can send a land unit into the sea. A land unit in the sea exists as a troop carrier unit. You can move wherever you want as long as it is within range. To return to shore, you need the troop carrier to be right next to a land tile.

In this game you have 1 general that you upgrade. There is a card that you buy battleship for 50$ i think that will then let you move into water (required to move in water) Hope this helps!
