I'm on 1939 Western Front and don't know who to get.
I'm thinking Axis since they are technically weaker than the Allies ones. Many are suggesting Leeb since we don't really have an artillery general. But I would use Bock for that and have Messe as the tank. Maybe another tank/artillery could be good, but I'm unsure.
Rn, Student doesn't seem too bad as he is a good infantry general, but unsure.

I created a guide where I looked at the best choice for the first few generals: european-war-4.boards.net/thread/13626/generals-path. Though I did overlook Student, so I might add him to it later, since he is pretty good aswell. Do keep in mind, that Leeb also gives bonus medals when killing enemies in the campaigns 1939 Western Front and 1941 Eastern Front. Also Bock is indeed just as strong on artillery as on tank, however, in campaigns you don't have a lot of money and recruiting tanks are very expensive. If you put Bock on a tank, the price to increase the unit size is reduced by 50%. Thus increasing the unit size by one costs only 18 instead of the normal 36, while artillery is by default 18. And I believe that keeping your forces at the max unit size is vital.

Is it possible to upgrade/improve free generals? I installed the game today but don't see how I can upgrade Messe, for example...

So far I have not found a way to upgrade any generals, only units and special forces. Which really limits the use of medals, but allows us to spend them all on buying more generals.

Guderian or Rundstedt (for F2P) Guderian. However if you are a f2p then i recommend leeb as you first axis commander he is slower however he packs a punch and i would say that bock and messe would suffice for begining tank commanders

Callevero or Boris

Callevero or Boris I would say boris since in mountains boris practically surpasses cavallero and boris for his price offers good utility as a mountain brawler plus he cost less! Cavallero also can't make up for it with his slight edge against boris when fighting infantry and more move compared to less price and 0<10(armor)5<10(art) damage boost that boris offers

Plus I actually think Cavallero is better. Boris does 1 more damage on a mountain. Cavallero does 5 more damage everywhere else and has a point of movement and extra crit chance and damage vs enemy infantry. Well worth the extra 25 medals should you think about getting either.

Yes however boris offers decent damage and utility on mountains he can almost be a second leclerc! And how much does the critical hit do btw? Is it a devastating blow like in wc4 or a weak c tier skill like in wc3?

Besides the historical lineup of 8 generals, you can only bring 1 or 2 other generals with you. So if you spend your medals on a cheap general, you waste one of the view slots on a weak general. You can win the campaign of 1939 western front without generals as well as some conquests in army group and atleast the Poland campaign in united front. With these medals you can easily purchase a top tier and strong general. Though I do agree with SolidLight , that student is a decent choice, one that I should have, but didn’t consider in my guide.

Yeah students kit sinergies perfectly allowing him to hit extremely hard and even outclass some gold generals so in summary boris and cavallero are both equally pointless
