This post was inspired by SolidLight 's post. I will also be using Iron Duke 's spreadsheet as I'm only at Discovery Age. I will be using Friedrich “Fried Rice” Paulus 's technique of color-coding as I find it efficient. Yes, this post will be very similar to SolidLight 's post and he deserves most of the credit for making this type of post first. I'm just putting in my opinion. These generals are not organized in a particular fashion.
Well, let's get started!
Purple - Some of the best generals.
Turquoise - Great generals.
Green - Good. Above average.
Yellow - Standard generals. Maybe useable for the era you buy them in if you don't have a good general.
Orange - Below average. Maybe useable with tons of upgrades and good items.
Red - The worst generals. Should never be used unless for the daily missions or benchwarmers or placeholders.
IAPs:
Genghis Khan: Pretty good general for his price. I would say he is a better Hannibal but with Marshal. Potentially purple as he does start as a Tier 3 unit if you just bought him in Classical. Good starting general if you buy him then.
Washington: I've heard he is a great archer general, if not the best. He gets Strafe & Archery which is epic. He targets everything (besides arty) at Level 6. Logistics isn't the best for archers but I'll take it. Defense Master is dead weight.
Napoleon: Solid artillery general, from what I understand he is probably the 2nd or 3rd best artillery general. Just like he is in European War 6: 1804, good, but not necessary.
Classical:
Caesar: I think he is good, with Cure master and I believe he and Montezuma are the only ones with Cure Master. He has Braveness and Defense Master, so he won't be attacked back and when he is attacked, his damaged will be cut. Quite a good defensive general (but has pretty much no offensive value besides his high attack, but it's kinda forgivable). Only big problems I have with him are his price and lack of a niche if used in offense.
Attila: I would say he's the best cavalry general. The combination of Cavalry Commander, Braveness and maybe Attack Master makes for a great cavalry general.
Robin Hood: An English archer. Do you know what this means? He gets 1-3 range in Medieval and Industrial. Should be used until you get: Washington, Nobunaga, or Yi sun-sin. Good starting general. Late on, however, Longbow is replaced by Nelson. I wouldn't touch him outside of Classical Age, however.
Leonidas: Trash. Use him until you get Alexander. After you get Alexander and Barbarossa never use him again unless he happens to be your only other general. What about his awakened form? Still absolute garbage.
Alexander: Great. I still use him myself. He has an ok active skill and Spy is useful. Attack Master could be useful. Best part is, you get him when you finish the second campaign chapter. Gets Hoplite at Medieval, making him a mobile, durable, and strong artillery-like general. Extremely expensive to upgrade, however.
Huo Qubing: I mean, sure. He has some durability issues. He is literally Hannibal with slightly better attack and slightly worse durability. And without those sweet elephants. I'll give him an exception as you do get him early on.
Cleopatra: Your artillery general until you get Bismarck or Li Shimin. Unnecessary if you have Napoleon. Better than Khalid. Not necessary to upgrade, or even use.
Hannibal: He is a good starting cavalry general. Attila does his job however, and Atilla is a beast. Even Shingen is better than him! Orange as soon as you get Attila.
Asoka: He is a good starting cavalry general. Later in the game, Edward easily replaces him, however.
Khalid: Worse than Cleopatra. I mean he and Heihachiro are the only ones with artillery commander, but still bad. Could be used as a companion to Cleopatra.
Pachacuti: Starts at Tier 2. Decent I guess. At least he has a Commander skill. His awakened form gets the blue.
Mulan: She gets Chi-ko-nu at Tier 3, but I don't think you should carry some one with mediocre skills from Tier 1 to Tier 3. Using Chi-ko-nu, she's orange. In her awakened form, she really only gets better stats, so I have no justification to but her in yellow.
Xerxes: Has Infantry Commander and Spy. Tier One Infantry is instantly trash as soon as you get Alexander. I guess useable if you are fond of upgrades.
Spartaus: Xerxes, but worse.
Beowulf: I think the only general worse than Leonidas. And at least Leonidas is free.
Medieval:
Charlemagne: The fact that he cost 2500 medals and has an average active skill. He has Shelter. Why? He'll be your arty meatshield. Plus, Defense Expert, not even Defense Master. Sad.
Li Shimin: This artillery general is the one of two artillery generals that have AOE damage from a unit. He gets Fire Dragon at both Medieval and Industrial. Probably the best artillery general. Expensive, but worth it. Logistics is decent, and Marshal is actually pretty good.
Richard: He has a regen skill and chaos to help immobilize his victims while he kills them. Plus, a decent active skill and he's very cheap at 2000 medals.
Barbarossa: Great. Works well with Alexander even though their skills are polar opposites. He's free too. Even gets the Teutonic Order.
Edward: Cavalry commander, leadership and heals forts. I guess he could be useful in a defensive situation. In stats, he kind of makes it up. His leadership also makes up for his fort skill. Pretty good. One of the 4 cavalry commanders.
Shingen: The better Hannibal, but without Stomp. You can try to make him diet Atilla, but I wouldn't drain my resourcs on that.
Belisarius: Could be useful as a benchwarmer or placeholder. Pretty bad, but at least he's pretty cheap.
Jebe: Bad passive skills, decent Active skill. Great on the defense, has little value on the offense. Tempted to give him the yellow, but be deserves the green. Only use him while in a pinch.
Montezuma: Only other Cure Master General. Like Edward, has Leadership and Fort Heal. Good defensive general. Best part is, he's a coin general.
Henry: Yes, he gets plunder! No, he's absolutely trash stats-wise and skills-wise!
Joan of Arc: Belisarius, but more durable. Decent all-rounder.
El Cid: Don't use him. Use him only for the bonus mission he's in. And use him the the form of the El Cid you are given at the start. Don't use him after that.
Wallace: Decent. Like a slightly better Medieval Leonidas.
Suriyothai: Skills good, stats bad for her regular form. One of the 4 cavalry commanders. I'm told upgrading her can be a good buff, and since she can have the Mahout (cavalry and artillery hybrid I think), she can be crucial to taking out fortifications. Her Awakened form can clap enemies without fear with Braveness, and with substantial investment, I believe she can get the blue, but only when she is in her 3* and 6* forms. Basically, her regular form gets the orange, her regular form with investment/her awakened form gets the green, while her awakened form with investment gets the blue.
Empire:
Nobunaga: Debuffing everything to ridiculous levels is his job, and he can cut enemies' defense and attack so you can come in and take little damage while easily knocking out enemies. He has monster stats, so he can destroy anything, with, or without allies.
Yi-sun-sin: Good Active skill, Navigation is meh, Bugle is good. Slightly cheaper and slightly worse stats than Nobunaga.
Suleiman: Great. Great stats, above average skills. You can make him a tanky cavalry, and with Rumor he will never die. As much as I hove his monster stats, Blucher outclasses him in the skills department by, well, a lot and can match Suleiman sometimes in the defense department. Worse than Blucher, but not by much.
Saladin: Free and great. Regen skill, attacking bonus, and an decent active skill. He can heal frequently with his great attack stat and with investment, Logistics and make him a valuable asset for conquests.
Batu Khan: Decent passive, bad active. Saladin makes his job useless and Leadership on fragile cavalry (ahem, Batu) is much worse than Leadership on an archer.
Columbus: Pretty bad skills. Doesn't help being an artillery general. One passive is for land, one is for sea. So which do you want to fight on?
Yoshitsune: Has Samurai. Just use him for the Empire campaigns, after that, he will be redundant for campaigns.
Discovery:
Koxinga: Absolute trash. The only thing that redeems him is Marshal, but Bismarck is tanky and can offer a lot more, for free! You might be able to give him Fire Dragon, which along with Marshal saves him from the red.
Peter: Rumor, great, commander, great, shelter, trash. Great general.
Catherine: Great archer general. Robin Hood's skills make her a better Jhansi, but with investment for Jhansi, Jhansi can outclass her in the end. A hybrid between Robin's skills and (kinda) Yi's bonuses.
Jhansi: Good skills, bad stats. Archer commander could boost her to blue, but no. As I have used her before, she has problems with durability and pretty bad output to me compared to generals like Nelson, Hongzhang, Nobunaga, or even Catherine. With lots of investment, she might have the potential to be blue and more useful than Catherine.
Lincoln: Good-ish skills, but usable for Discovery. You can always invest him to be a mini-Richard.
Gunpowder:
Blucher: The better Suleiman. The stat gap between him and Suleiman is bigger than I care for, but his skills are much better. Expensive, but worth it with investment.
Nelson: One of the only 4 archer commanders. Commander alone makes him worth it. Passive skills are decent. A better Yi-sun-sin.
James Wolfe: He is just bad. I mean at least he is a Royal Guard. Orange is for the Royal Guard, without it, red.
Industrial:
Heichachiro: Only other artillery commander. Sad he joins so late, but great stats and good skills.
Li Hongzhang: Only other Archer Commander. Good skills.
Petain: This guy is a GREAT infantry general. He's like Lincoln, but instead of General, Petain has Marshal. Instead of Formation Master, He has Commander. Starts out as a Tier 5 Unit, and joins kind of late. I would say better than Peter. He is on tier with both purple and blue, but I feel like he deserves purple as he has good skills and starts out as a good unit. The color of the general affects the rage and Petain is blue, but it's cheaper to upgrade him since he's blue.
Kemal: Shouldn't need him at this time.
Conrad: Shouldn't need him at this time.
Bismarck: Great free artillery general. Starts at 5 stars too. This guy is just a Napoleon that can tank hits, in exchange for less attack. Rumor will be good in the Arena. Worse than Li Shimin because his 6* form is much worse than his 5* form.
