It has been a month since I did the last installment of this series, so I made another one! John is Karl's younger brother, and Karl is a beast in-game, so one might assume battling prowess runs in the family. One would be half right, as John is also a beast (more on that later), but Emperor Francis himself is bad (he is only available in conquests).
Missions
John I: Simple. Attack the city directly west to you and go south to help your allies.
John II: Lure Murat out of the city as he is the objective and eliminate him.
John III: Capture the city right under you and go through the fort and the city southwest of it, evading some troops. Station John on the mountain-forest tile and use your best general to attack Mahmud and capture the city. Your allies' nay will be of great use.
John IV: This level is a significant jump in difficulty from the last one. Attack the bottom city and capture the objectives in a 2-pronged attack (or one at a time, it really up to you). Don't forget your allies' objective, so have some units to skirmish the enemy.
John V: Similar to John IV, attack Ferdinand VII and O'Donoju in a 2-pronged attack and meet up at Palafoxy's city. If doing a 2-pronged attack is too costly, attack in this order: Ferdinand, Palafoxy, O'Donoju. Don't forget about your allies' objective.
John VI: Uh oh. This is probably the hardest VI mission maybe other than Lannes VI, so pay attention: Attack the city closest to you, leave a tanky general there, so south of the mountains, attack Greene, and attack Washington. Also, try to capture your allies' attacking point early on.
Review:
The reason John is so good is because he has two compatible terrain skills, mountain and forest. He also has great stats, and has great output. The only complaints I have is he takes a long time to train to Major General and King (and no aura, but he will be a beast when maxed. According to this post by andrei , John has the 2nd highest output when on terrain, even going above Napoleon, of all people, only below Mahmud. Mountain-forest tiles aren't that rare, and he has good output even on one of the terrain, and mountain-forests tend to be near cities, so added bonus. His skills are all level 2 at first, and we have already discussed the greatness of his terrain skills, so here are his other skills: Salvo and Storm Fortifications. Salvo is obviously great, and Storm is pretty good, as it helps with cracking cities, though it would be great if Storm was swapped for Aura. His I-III missions aren't THAT hard and IV-V are easy with the right preparations. VI is horribly hard, so if you can't beat it, buy John as he is already affordable 40% off.
Conclusion:
John's missions from I-V are easy, but VI is hard. John's skills are great, and he is only lacking aura, and grinding may be tough, but it is worth it. We have seen that according to the stats, John is only behind Mahmud in output, his skills accompany each other well, and is affordable. I would say if you think one (or 2 if you get Napoleon) artillery aura is enough, get John. Goodness, get Alexander too and you will be having a squad so great that Kutuzov will be crying because he isn't in.
