RommelType of General : Tank
The Desert fox aka Rommel is the best Heavy Tanker in the game. However, though he and Guderian are almost same in quality, Rommel is more suited for Heavy Tanks and has less survivability in Medium tanks as compared to Guderian. I'd say that getting him in late game, after you get your basic needs. He's an absolute beast on Heavy Tanks and the best on it, perhaps even better than Manstein. Tide of Iron and more importantly Panzer Leader makes him a beast on Heavy Tanks.
________________ I actually disagrees with this one. Getting Rommel late game is a wasted potential imo. If you're a free to play and you don't want to grind, by the time you can afford Guderian you're already on the Eastern Front campaign. In most Axis Eastern Front missions there's a heavy tank which is more suited for Rommel. If you put Guderian on medium instead of heavy that's a sin, but Rommel's better on heavy. In most pacific missions the difference is a land general or a navy general. From my experience, Guderian won't be needed until Western 44, when there's usually two heavy tanks available and he's the second best heavy tank general for axis (excluding Manstein). Sure, that's a good different perspective. But Guderian should be your first general because medium tanks. Guderian's (And Manstein too) skills are suited for Medium Tanks. Especially Blitzkrieg. Rommel is by far the best HT general because of Panzer Leader. Once he killed my 2 stacked Vatutin in a single turn on HT (In Normandy Landings). That just completely shattered my morale.

There one more thing that Guderian can do better than Rommel, namely get medals while we are playing two first campaigns. Not grinding, just playing. I am really curious how much is he be able to earn. I will write it down and report it later.

YamamotoType of General : Navy/Airforce
Yamamoto is the best Airforce general in the game. Carpet bombing, Dive bombing and Air force cluster, all supplement his 4 stars in Air, which is really huge. However, Yamamoto performs his role the best in Aircraft carriers. On land, the frontline shifts continuosly and he has to paratroop from one place to the other, in which he's a crap, especially since he has no infantry stars. He can't take many hits and if there's no economy to use on airforce, then you have wasted on general slot for that mission. Still, his airforce ability is extremely good, which makes him a tough competitor for that airforce slot. i think Yamamoto should be purple he still a great general like kesselring (or even better if you only use him for Air Units). moreover on Pacific 1942 and 1945 Carrier will always be available so you don't have to use him as a paratroop general.

I think Kesselring is better than Yamamoto. Kesselring has ok land capability so he can be used even there. Yamamoto isn't really good on land and in most Axis missions, we don't get enough economy initially. So if you don't have any coins to spare then Yamamoto isn't any better than any normal unit, unlike Kesselring whom you can at least send into a suicide charge with his 4 infantry stars. Also, Kesselring's air abilities are really enough if you ask me. A top general like Yamamoto isn't really needed.

YamashitaType of General : Infantry
If you ask me, Yamashita is probably the best infantry general, with Rundstedt coming in close second. Guerilla is similar to Blitzkrieg i.e. a 50% chance he enemy won't counterattack. Bayonet Charge gives him additional damage buff and Samurai prevents his morale from being dropped, which means he can attack as many times he want, without the fearing of going into low morale. Give him a Wiking/Grenadier and he turns into an armored grinder.
I feel that Yamashita and Rundstedt are both at the opposite poles. Rundstedt being a survivor and Yamashita, a heavy lifter. But since infantry are easy to recruit and replenish, I can easily give Yamashita the edge in Infantry. Your perspective and your choice on who to buy depends on whether you want a high damage dealing offensive general or a survivor who deals moderate damage. Rundstedt actually does more damage but has less survivability than Yamashita. PL does give ~21 HP back, and for Rundstedt, that's not bad. Samurai is eh, valuable, sure, but I have never seen a general besides MacArthur get demoralized from attacking, and MacArthur was also flanked. At least give Rundstedt the purple.

And I learned a few new things here so hopefully it will be continued.
In the meantime, let's have a skill discussion since many questions arose when reading the first post. I'm taking a skeptical position (if my experiences give me reason to do so) here with the goal to ultimately come to a deeper understanding :-p
1. Plain Fighting : Plain Fighting works everywhere, except when on Mountains and Jungles. Plains are basically everywhere so it's a very useful skill. The difference is evident in Govorov especially. Certainly the best among all terrain skills but it also makes you not use the defense bonus provided by cities/single buildings, forests, mountains and there are rivers, swamps, desert and snow tiles which also don't grant bonus damage. Heck this might even be the reason why Leeb can be considered better than Govorov: "limited" movement/positioning and 2 less damage than these "+12 when attacking" skills. And if Govorov is on a heavy art he will not profit form PF when enemies sneak up to him and attack him at close range.
2. Fire Suppression : Reduces certain % of enemy's attack. Great skill It works only when being counterattacked during our turn, so statistically, Guerrilla is better
3. Plunder Supply : Restores certain % of hp on killing units. Very good, especially on Heavy Tanks. Even more so if you can kill enemies multiple times. ? killing one stack or the whole unit and which numbers are we talking (roughly, for example after killing infantry - heavy tank)
4. Leadership : Reduces the cost of recruiting troops by 50%. Really great skill, especially on a free general like Bock. It makes putting Bock on Heavy Tanks viable. Just know that stacking your general with Tank costs 36, whereas stacking a Heavy tank with Leadership costs just 25. It's a little confusing, the numbers should be 36/18 for medium and 50/25 for heavy tanks. Btw I love this skill, it's a shame no strong general has it.
9. Economics : Gives certain extra gold when in cities. Situational again, but great when put to use. Have this general capture most of the cities for maximum output. ? will this also work on oil platforms and ports
10. Jungle fighting : Gives certain extra damage when in Jungles. Very Good for non ranged units because forests give +2 defense. Good for ranged units. One could argue that ranged units have more choice when positioning because they don't need to stand next to the target, so they can make better use of "rare" terrain
14. Logistics : Great for navy units. Especially considering that Ships are expensive to heal and land units are not. Imo it's a "nice to have" at best. And, since it's a fixed amount of 8 HP/round it even becomes worse when progressing in the game. 17. Machinist : Gives certain increase in HP when replenishing. Has more effect if your General has stars. Still, an ok skill. ? stars=more HP via promotion? if so then I think it becomes worse, I'd really like some opinions here
18. Samurai : Prevents morale drop. Great skill I agree and would rank this way higher
23. Ace forces : Your units gain exp more faster and level up more faster. I don't really care about units levelling up. But it's a good bonus. Becomes next to useless when tech becomes lv6 because then there is only one more level up. 25. Elastic Defense : Goes BOOM BOOM! when infantry attacks ships. Bad otherwise. ? why is this good in the given example
26. Amphibious : Bonus damage when attacking enemy units from sea. Extremely situational. In fact so much that it's a bad skill. ? Does anyone have experience with this? Is the full damage calculated with the navy stars or with the land unit stars? It just happens to be that bot amphibious generals have equal stars in inf and navy... but with the aura from Donitz I can confirm that it's the navy stars that count.
28. Scout : Meh, only useful if you want to use your general as a punching bag for the enemy or for generals whom you use to scout. But who would use a general for such purposes? ?has anyone ever leveled up by means of this skill
It costs resources to maintain a high(er) number of stacks on your generals and while this is easiest achieved with infantry they also take the most damage when focused.

This would be great:) my gut feeling says ~100 medals but I really have no idea You are close 72 medals (29 in 1939 and 43 in 1941). I haven't replayed a single mission since all of them were 3*. So, it is the lowest possible border, I think.

Done the calcs. If Plunder is taken in, the survivability would be more balanced, giving Rundstedt the edge, as he needs the take ~21 damage or less per unit to stay a max HP, which is a floor that will be broken, but is still good.
