It seems like it's that time of the year where we start doing rankings. So with that, allow me to present my version for artillery generals!
1. Zhukov
Ah Zhukov, literally overpowered, almost a +50 damage on artillery. Hands down taking the top spot for artillery generals.
HEY WAIT- this guy is a 5 star general!
Kicks this guy out of my free 4 star rankings
Ahem, let us now continue with the true rankings.
1. Leeb
4 Artillery Stars, 2 Infantry Stars, 1 Mobility Star
I love the skills given to us.
Fire Focus (Gold) - Additional 12 DMG at any time? Yes please.
Accuracy (Gold) - Yes!
Artillery Leader (Silver) - Could be better, it's nice icing on the cake.
Conclusion: Must have for the axis campaigns. Buy, buy buy! The moustache is pretty smart too.
2. Govorov
The skills are really nice here too. You have to love Govorov almost as much as his axis counterpart, Leeb
Accuracy (Gold), Yes again!
Artillery Leader (Gold) - to pray that we can punch those tanks again!
Plain Fighting (Gold) - is still rather decent, since every map has plains, we can work with that.
(No, Naval maps do not count, stop right there)
Conclusion: Upgraded Chuikov, a nice to have in late game. Those 4 stars and plain fighting are really good. He makes stalin proud.
3. Badoglio
3 Artillery Stars, 2 Mobility Stars, 1 Infantry Star, 1 Armoured star
Fire Focus (Gold) - Lots of hearts!
Accuracy (Silver) - sure!
Economics (Gold) - I'm really really sorry, but no.
I need my generals to cross the map taking objectives most of the time. Defensive missions are few and far between.
Conclusion: Kind of good? Decent? A very different playstyle to sit in buildings, but definitely still worth considering to buy
4. Chuikov
3 Artillery Stars, 2 Infantry Stars, 1 Mobility Star
Ah Chuikov, our free general. He'll carry you through thick and thin, hell or high water.
Fire Focus (Silver) - I aint complaining, that makes him pretty much a 4 star
Artillery Leader (Silver) - Yes sir, still decent Salutes
Street Fighting (Silver) - I'll take it when since every map has towns to besiege
Conclusion: He's free, He's Chuikov, He's "poggers"
5. Simonds
3 Artillery Stars, 1 Armoured Star
Artillery Leader (Silver) - Yees sure. That's cool and all to attack again.
Jungle Fighting (Gold) - We can work with this. Most maps have jungles. Except for Africa.
Conclusion: Decent artillery fellow, if he appears as your ally, know that the trees speak howitzer and shoots big shells.
6. Voronov
3 Artillery Stars, 1 Infantry Star
This fella is cool as an artillery general.
Artillery Leader (Silver) - True blooded artillery skill, I'll take it
Accuracy (Silver) - Another true blooded artillery skill. Not bad, not bad.
Conclusion: A budget true blooded artillery general. He bleeds 76mm shells. If you meet him on the battlefield, he's a pretty average friend or foe.
7. Konev
3 Artillery Stars, 3 Infantry Stars, 2 Armoured Stars, 1 Mobility Star
Oh no. Oh no. For all the Russian bias in games, just no.
This fellow is not an artillery general.
Snow Fighting (Gold) - Okay, yes there are snowy maps, few and far between, but I'll kind of accept it.
Crossfire (Gold) - Same thing, my artilleries should stay at the backline. I am no psycho to let my artilleries get hit.
Really good for the enemy AI though, since I'm forced to attack them.
Encouraged (Gold) - Same thing as desperate, Artilleries take the first shot, they don't usually annihilate troops.
Conclusion: Nein, Non, No. Here for the AI to use and attack you back with that crossfire. He's an infantry general for the love of Lenin.
8. Rommel
4 armour stars, 3 artillery stars, 3 mobility stars, 2 air force stars
I'm not going crazy. There are times that I'll place Rommel on artillery in challenges.
3 mobility stars x artillery works like a charm. Vroom Vroom, meet the artillery with glorious Volkswagen engines
Desert Fighting (Gold) - Meeeh, there are some deserts to use artillery in, but those are a minority
Conclusion: The movement makes him really really good. But for the love of the desert fox, use him on a tank in campaigns
9. Alexander
3 Artillery stars, 3 Infantry stars, 2 Armoured stars
Desert Fighting (Gold) - I mean, we're using him in 1941's deserts. Pretty cool.
Machinist (Silver) - Erm. Nice cherry on top of the cake? My artillery is backline and aint tanking much damage though.
Conclusion: He's free. I really disliked with him was the lack of movement speed in the desert. Pain Peko. Go back to Chuikov once out of 1941
10. De Gaulle
3 Artillery Stars, 3 Armoured Stars, 2 Infantry Stars, 2 Mobility Stars
What is he! Some Hybrid Monster?
Okay okay, let's try to look for his good points.
Desperate (Silver) - I'm sorry. As an Artillery general, your job is to stay at the back lines and shoot. Not using this.
I'll love it if I were a psychopath throwing artilleries to the front line or shooting artilleries with my artilleries
Inspiration (Gold) - Well, I don't mind this. Artillery's backline means that the frontline gets the inspiration boost. Until I place him on a heavy artillery.
Rumor (Gold) - Uhm. As an artillery, he's taking the first shot to whittle down enemy. The only thing that was annihilated was my belief in him.
Conclusion: Non, Non, Non. Go back to using him on a tank
11. Blamey
3 Artillery Stars, 1 Infantry Star, 1 Air Force Star
Encouraged (Silver) - No. Again, No. Same as rumour, artilleries take the first shot, not the last shot
Garrison (Gold) - Nope, nope, my troops are crossing the map. Defensive missions are few and far between.
Conclusion: Made for the AI to sit on an airport and shoot you.
Somewhere along the line, this became a race to the bottom.
Feel free to share your thoughts, salt and memes!
