From what I can remember, the battle was inconclusive because both sides were forced to retreat because of an attack by africanized killer bees. The british commander was demoted because he had not won against such a small army, not becaause he lost against them. It made warfare near impossible for both sides. The africanized killer bee exist only in America and not before 1957. Comming with the white flag and surrender is not very inconclusive. My cite is from the official British history book of the battles of WW. Okay, like I said, that was what I remembered, apparently my memory was wrong. By a lot.

I could not remember too Gerd von Rundstedt, so I read some sources. This campaign is such a unbelievable collection of epic fails and errors that it becomes almost amusing. A fleet of more than 30 ships and almost 10,000 soilders can't contol a city defended by 250 local policemen. Lettow Vorbeck organized and came with 700 additional men from 350km distance - in time ! Also the peacefull redraw of the british troops after the battle, developed so chaotic that with the vast amount of military and civil leftovers, Lettow Vorbeck and his troops could stand the British throughout the whole war (even a few days longer).
