Been playing EW5 for 16-17 days already, and i gotta say, it's still my favorite Easytech game. But it's bothering me that i haven't made any guides for the game( most threads i made were asking questions or arguing about archer superiority). So why not make a guide, or rather some observations that would help other players who would want to play the game. Of course, i'm not done with the game( far from it), so i'll be updating once i learn new relevant information. I also want to complete this as a sort of general short guide for new players. Information about EW5 is quite hard to get without generally asking, so that's why i made this thread.
Which generals are must haves?
- No general is an island, but some are really large boulders. I don't believe there are must haves, but some are close. Nobunaga is considered the one that you should always get. Attila is also good, but i'd say he's more skippable that Nobunaga. Julius Caesar if you're a hipster( he's really great, just really expensive). Still highly recommended. Moctezuma for his utility.
Which comp should i focus around on?
- Archer comp is definitely the safest and the one that gets to shine the most in the late game. It's impossible to ignore archers, some of the hardest missions require archer coms to complete. They hit really hard as well, and the best debuff supports are from the archer class. That said, archer comps aren't the end all be all, and they have their weakness. One, they're not the most durable. Second, the best archer commander generals are in the later parts of the game( not as relevant really, commander skills aren't necessary early to mid game due to how powerful artifacts are). Third, they need a strong frontline to deal with infantry, although this is only relevant in arena, and arena can get chaotic, and this is where their range comes in. Fourth, not all archers are created equal(but surprisingly enough, a lot of archers are quite competent).
Okay, archers and archer comp is great. So which comp next?
- This is harder to answer. It's much easier to list out their pros. Cav comps are pretty powerful when controlled by the player. They are mobile due to their skill mobility( really useful ability, 100% chance to act after defeating a unit. Makes the majority of them one man armies given the right circumstance); the key unit of the comp: Attila, is available early on; They have fast rage regeneration( provided they keep on defeating units) making them good candidates for holding artifacts. Their cons is how fragile they are against archers, and how easy it is for them to get shut down by debuffs like leadership ( all generals do get weakened by debuffs, but a class that's heavily reliant on stats and killing to get going is going to be the one hit the hardest. Seeing attila debuffed with leadership struggle to even kill a single infantry unit is just sad).
For infantry, infantry comp is really strong let me tell you that. What they lack in mobility, they trade for more versaitility and durability. Infantry getting buffed in rage regeneration makes them really good at holding artifacts that are defensive in nature( Bottle of life and Aegis namely. Some even have the attack values to use the damage artifacts like Gungir). They are quite versatile as well. Peter, Alexander, Caesar, Barbarossa. These guys do different things, and that makes them fulfill a lot of things that Cav comps struggle with. They also counter archers, so that's a big positive. I'll also defend Alexander by being the infantry with the highest rage regeneration. 2 piece Paladin set with Alexander using Gungir or Aegis( something i plan to make happen for arena later on) would make him ideally proc them in 2 hits. He also has high stats for being a gold general, and you may say that the cost of upgrading his skills is high, but the thing is, he doesn't need to. Cost of upgrading rank is high tho, so that's a negative for him. Still don't recommend him early and only useful later in the game. And that's also one negative of infantry: their greatness comes later on once they get 6 stars. Honestly, thinking about it now, with the knowledge i have, i would have went infantry comp, as much as i love Cavalry. It's worth to slot in Barbarossa and Peter in your arena teams later on. Cavalry also just stomp on them early on, Attila being the prime suspect. But thanks to Easytech giving infantry some love, they can now resist being destroyed by cavalry general, but don't expect them to take negligible damage from certain cavalry. They also don't have the highest damage overall, but that's not a big deal when you have the archer boys covering for that.
Artillery as a comp, is a weird one. They're not really too useful outside Arena, but an artillery or 2 is definitely needed for your game. Just invest one( cleo is good enough) until the late game, then invest in another one once you reach in the industrial age(Bismarck is enough). Khalid is also a good alternative to cleopatra. The others are just too expensive to justify. But if you get Napoleon, then there's even less incentive to even think about buying more until you decide to make a really strong arena core( so you don't have to rely on refreshes.
Do we need to build our team around comps?
- Not really, but it makes meeting damage requirements much easier. Balanced teams are a thing, and you can succeed with them. In fact, i think the best balanced team later on is with 2-3 cavalry( ideally Suri and Attila being in there, with Hannibal/Blucher/Saladin as the 3rd wheel), 1-2 artillery, 3 or more archers, and 1 or 2 infantry. For cavalry, i never really needed to use cav commander most of the time(he's holding grasscutter, so maybe i'll be using it more if i don't have that artifact). Hannibal just stomps infantry, so there's that. Suri needs her awakened form, but she gets a really good glow-up once she gets that (50,000 points in arena, 15 days once arena is unlocked provided you get a perfect score, which you should). Blucher replaces Hannibal in the main group once you get him, and his damage reduction buff is just great. He lacks the damage against infantry, but that's something Suri and Attila can handle. Saladin is a good gungir holder, good survivability once he reaches 6 stars, and is a good soloist due to logistics, but i don't think he's a great team player in the long run and he'll be a bench warmer once you get Blucher. He can equip Aegis, but that would remove his ability to equip gungir or any other damage artifact, making his damage potential plummet. Aegis is also hard to get. Don't get me wrong, Saladin is good and is worth the investment, but from a longevity stand point, he isn't as good as the others mentioned. For archers, the usual trio (Moctezuma, Nobunaga, Jhansi/Li hongzhang/Nelson/Pachi) should suffice for the majority of campaigns and missions. You can replace Moctezuma with another Commander archer, or just have all 4 commander archers and Nobunaga for monstrous damage, but that damage is mostly unnecessary and quite impractical most of the time. For infantry, they're reserved as artifact holders/debuffers/secondary damage dealer. This is why Peter and Barbarossa are recommended for this. Both cheap, both can do debuff, and both still do respectable damage. For artillery, just get Cleo and add in Bismarck. Of course, you can't fit all of them, so it's better to adjust based on what's needed. I did my run with cavalry and Archers the majority of the time with Cleo cracking cities, but if i knew earlier, i would have invested in Barbarossa or bought Peter to make some challenges a lot easier.
Do keep in mind tho that flexibility is important, and adapting to situations without compromise should be the goal. We eventually get a decent amount of medals per day( 240 from trials, 400 from daily missions,50 from daily rewards, that's 690 medals daily) , so given time, we can max the majority of generals. You can go for a mix team then use the medals to eventually go for a certain comp, or vice versa.
Where do we spend medals? Does spending medals efficiently even matter?
- As stated by Iron Duke , rank>important skills(commander skills, leadership, rumor, spy)>alright skills(ambush, etc.)/ items > stat boosting skills. Correct me if i'm wrong. For generals, i'm of the opinion that you don't really need to spend too much medals in buying generals. You can complete the campaign without buying any generals with medals, although it would be harder of course. If we ignore the "no generals bought" gameplay, then the first general we buy using medals is either Attila or Julius. Attila is great, but Julius' heal would make your life easier, and he's a beast as well. Also, i have to mention that your first pick will not determine which comp you should go for. You can pick Julius and go for cav comp later, but getting Attila is definitely more efficient when you go for Cav comp, or just in general, Attila will deliver. Ah man, i just realized that this is another win for archer comps,as no matter who you pick, it won't matter for archer comp. Anyway, next medal purchase would definitely be Nobunaga. Unless you're going for a no Nobunaga run, there's no reason to skip him. That's it really. The others are great, but they're dependent on which comp you'll go for. Nelson would be really helpful in Volgograd and in archer comps, but you can sub him with Robin with an artifact. Edward is a good addition for cav comps, Peter and Petain come a bit later but they're great additions to mix and infantry comps. Blucher is a great addition to any team, but he's really expensive, so he's reserved for harder challenges once you complete the main campaigns. Jebe is good for his active and becomes a ranged cavalry when he reaches 6 stars, so he's good. Others are too expensive compared to alternatives. You can buy them later on if you want.
For the medal efficiency, it matters, in a way that medal efficiency makes progress much faster, and progressing faster is good( although you don't need to progress fast). You also get stuck less as you putting your medals in places where it matters, making you complete those difficult missions easier. This matters a lot more when you reach discovery age. Trust me, the jump in difficulty from Empire age to Discovery age is quite big.
Any generals to look out for?
-aside from what i mentioned, Catherine the great is a good purchase, and will serve you will later on. She's pretty much a range counter. Can't stress how good Moctezuma is. Awakened Mulan has a high damage output, basically a glass cannon. Joan of Arc becomes a wall later on and she has a decent heal as well for early game to midgame. Awakened Beowulf and Spartacus are also good.
Any skill/general combination to look out for?
- I don't know why no one mentioned it, but armor expert/master+cure expert/master. Take less damage, heals become more effective. People argue which is better, when they should be arguing how good they are in tandem for each other. If i knew it earlier, i would've purchased Jebe and would've paired him with Moctezuma. Would've made early difficult missions a lot more bearable. Leadership is just the best passive skill no contest. Inspiration keeps your blue and grey generals keep up stat wise, and it's cheap as well. Rumor and spy are also worth mentioning.
Which I.A.P is worth purchasing?
-Honestly, they're all worth it. But, not every I.A.P is created equal. So i'll give my recommendation to buy based on price vs performance: Bottle of Life> Grasscutter>Washington>Napoleon>Genghis Khan. The items are better since you just need to buy them and they're good. They also use a separate currency to upgrade them, so you don't need medals to upgrade them. Bottle of life is clearly the best purchase by far. Cheap (only a dollar and a half), and provides a really great boost in survival not just for the user but for anyone close to the user. Grasscutter and Washington are honestly close, i give it to Grasscutter since it's less cheap to upgrade and not as expensive as Washington's upgrade( Logistics is so expensive, but it's worth it once you get it to atleast level 8). Napoleon is the best artillery general, and he's really great, but the free artillery gens are enough, but he does make it so you don't need to even consider buying artillery gens later on. The most expensive purchase, great for arena, great in campaigns, just not good in dealing with units and bosses immune to rumor. Genghis is great early game, but falls off later. I know how good Genghis+Bottle of life is, but here's the thing: Bottle of life is good without Genghis, Genghis needs Bottle of life to be great. He has really high stats, so that's something. But he gets eviscerated by Leadership.
If you have to pick one, get bottle of life. And don't forget to upgrade( i only upgraded mine when i was already in the gunpowder age, could've saved me a lot of headache in the discovery age).
Are grey and blue generals worth it?
-Yup. Not all tho, but some are. To list some in the blue corner: Hannibal for infantry slaying, basically Genghis lite. Khalid, Cleo for artillery. Huo as Saladin lite and Asoka as Edward lite. Catherine as mentioned. Peter, Petain and Li honzhang are the best in terms of price performance, just not the best availability. Jebe as mentioned. For Grey, the majority of awakened ones are good, but Suriyothai, Mulan, Beowulf, and Pachacuti stand out.
Which age has the highest jump in difficulty?
- Discovery age. You thought the earlier campaigns were harder? You haven't seen difficult yet. Generals land a lot of debuffs, high stats and more numerous. Missions are harder due to multiple objectives far from each other, more enemy spam and larger hordes of enemies to deal with. The positive is that, if you can move shoulder through Discovery age missions, you're ready for the last 2 ones.
Requirements to beat the first greek trial?
- lvl 20 or higher Moctezuma with some level in cure master, level 6 leadership, high stat general like Caesar or Attila at 30 as damage dealer, and some other generals that can do damage. That's it. Get the anti-cav debuff, get some archers, and go beat Odin.
Requirements for Nordic Decisive battle?
- Ideally a gunpowder team. Would be a lot easier with Bottle of life. If you don't have it, Moctezuma with cure master with Jebe/anyone with Armor master would help mitigate the damage. Stack leadership, give gungir to your highest damage dealing general, then keep restarting until you get the optimal restart. Have some back-ups like Catherine that you can buy from the tavern to clean-up. Loki doesn't have logistics, so you just keep throwing low levels at him. Swap items as well from your main team to your secondary team. It's better to keep Nobunaga and Moctezuma separata, Moctezuma in the first team and Nobunaga in the second so you'll have leadership for round 2. With Bottle of life, you can do it with only 1 team.
Which trial to farm?
- thanks to stoic for this one. Greek trial I is the way to go, until you can farm Nordic Decisive battles. Farming Nordic Decisive battle requires you to have atleast 2 or more members that are 6 stars lvl 60, preferably Nobunaga one being of them. Greek trial I is also easier the nordic D.B.
Requirements for Greek trial III?
-This one is quite hard to answer. Better to have most of your main team at 6 stars lvl 60. If you have an infantry team, you'll get through easier. Until the boss, mobs shouldn't be a problem. Boss tho, you need archers. 2 teams is ideal, first team to clear the mobs and chip zeus, second to destroy the towers. Zeus is not hard to kill, but he hits hard, so bring in your generals that have leadership, preferably archers. Then bring in bismarck , cleo with khalid to deal with the towers (Cleo with great items is enough, provided you have fodder to tank the towers or items that heal). Armor expert/master generals is also appreciated here. If you have a cavalry team tho, it's gonna be a pain. Pick the path with the least normal mob encounter and go for cavalry bosses to avoid mobs. This is one reason why i would recommend for people going cav comp to get Peter/and or invest in Barbarossa if you want a smooth progression to collect thunder, which is a really solid artifact.
Any cool tips?
-removing your best items and giving it to a general you want to level up, using them in a daily mission and using ads to skip waiting time is a decent way to level up generals.
That's it for now. I'll be adding more information as i learn them or if Easytech realeases more updates(hopefully). I'll just add some questions concerning empire mode and other questions people keep asking about EW5 later on, as it's already a bit too long and i have to do something else. Please comment which questions need to be answered, no matter how basic, as i want to make this one as comprehensive as possible. I want to thank stoic , Iron Duke , Thortilla , Erich von Manstein , Gerd von Rundstedt , and all the others i didn't mention who helped me when i asked questions, especially stoic and Iron Duke . For those i didn't mention, you can complain in the comments (thanks btw, mayankshadow).
