I would say giving him all the skills for the Banner of Jupiter. They are all strong, and you can support all of them and take 25% less counter.

Cavalry Commander is better at attacking and rushing, but an Infantry Commander is the best at defense and survivability. And, you have more options to choose skills for him. The best banner for him is BANNER OF JUPITER. - Best defensive Inf commander: Hide - Counter Attack - Ambush - Shield Wall. - Very good defensive Inf commander with some attacking ability: Shield Wall - Counter Attack - Hide - Infantry Commander. - Good defensive Inf commander with siege ability: Shield Wall - Counter Attack - Siege - Infantry Commander. - Balance between defending and attacking: Shield Wall - Counter Attack - Roar - Inf Commander. - Good attacking and mobility: Shield Wall - March - Roar - Inf Commander. - Best attacking and mobility: Plain Fighting - March - Roar - Inf Commander. I like those generals, and I've probably been underestimating Roar. But I'm not sure how important defensive generals are. Admittedly I'm only on chapter 8, but when I've needed a general for defensive duties Vercingetorix has been more than up to the task. His lack of mobility makes him better suited to a defensive role too. So I definitely prefer a more attack-oriented Commander. The idea of an Antony that doesn't die easily fills me with joy.

This happens to be my area of expertise)) If they're calculated separately, then pursuit at 60% plus 4 levels of cavalry commander at 20% means 0.4 * 0.8 = 0.32 probability of *not* attacking again, or only 68% chance of attacking again. Basically cavalry commander isn't as good as it sounds; 60% of the time it doesn't even apply so it's actually only +2% per level. I still think it's one of the best four skills for cavalry. I've decided to do the switch to cavalry, and to get guerrilla, assault, cavalry commander, and I expect I'll go with march, then with Pompey and Antony I am speed. I can get banner of Apollo as well which sounds fantastic. Thanks to all of you for the advice. Neeeeerd. That said, practically speaking, it's going to be quite relevant. You're basically tossing the coin twice. If you get atleast 1 head after killing something, then you get to act again. And we must not think of it as just one instance, but multiple, since we'll be attacking quite a lot with our cavalry, so eventually, against units we don't kill, it will proc, it's an inevitability unless you get really unlucky and finish the campaign or conquest fast. LOL, I admit nerdiness))) I may not have your in-depth knowledge of GCR or ET games in general, but feel free to apply for resolution of all your mathematical quandaries)

Most of the time, math part doesn't apply in practical terms, unless arguing for why something is important or not. Basically, you bring in the numbers only if you need to win an argument, or to prove the usefulness of an ability . 25% chance of attacking is a 1/4 chance , you'll eventually roll that dice eventually. Compared to 0% chance of happening, which is certain that you would never act again.

Commander skills can trigger multiple times during your turn (I read 3 times somewhere) and while the 60% is only checked if we kill a unit/stack, Commander skills can activate anytime.

Haven't solved for the probability, but I'll just give the scenario as i didn't record a video on it: Some Decisive Battle, Hannibal going in ham against 2 bosses.

Well, hard to argue about that, since in GCR we don't get a visual sign of the commander skills triggering (unlike GoG3 for example). It's most likely though that this resulted from a combination of Pursuit and Commander. Anyways, I checked the source (GCR manual) and boy was I wrong "6.2.1 Commander: How many combo shots do cavalry without generals have? Headquarter: One" Not sure of this is still up to date or even relevant for our discussion.

I didn't realize that pursuit was limited in those ways, that definitely makes cavalry commander a lot stronger. Still, when we want to use cavalry to its full potential, we aim for (stack) kills while the other units provide enough support damage (here it's important to develop a gut feeling for who deals how much damage) so that the target's HP are in range for a guaranteed kill. So, cav Commander helps to keep this kill chain going and it even helps as a safety net if the damage estimations were off/bad rng. Once this tactic is mastered we also tend to plan ahead on using it (thus positioning our general) and here your probability calculation is applied: 1-0.4*0.75=70% (getting a kill with pursuit and maxed skill+banner) to get at least a second hit. That is something which can be seen as "probably gonna happen" and you put the general in a spot where he can make use of a second hit instead of what you would do with only one hit available (->defensive terrain etc). With if/arch/nav commander, the chance is 25% which is too low to build a tactic around it.

I guess when you have some very strong players on both sides, it just shows that there isn't really a wrong choice) I went with cavalry, there's usually at least one good cavalry unit and it seems like you can really turn it into an OP monster. It leaves me a bit thin at infantry for the moment but I intend to get Crassus soon.

I mean, you really can't do better than a Belisarius 2.0. Infantry has them too, but they also have the Banner of Jupiter, which is a game changer.

There aren't that many great cavalry generals, in fact none really good except Hannibal and Belisarius. Banner of Jupiter isn't very good either, the skills it buffs are mediocre except infantry commander and the talent is basically just level 5 ambush. The banner of Vulcan on Vercingetorix is much better imo.

Level 5 Ambush is great, but Shield Wall and an actual Ambush are enough. Infantry is also very durable and easy to replenish. Also, there are countless good infantry generals too. Vercingetorix and Pompeius are superb. Crassus, Labienus, Agrippa and Bato are great. Burebista, Cassius, even Cicero, Chen and Flaminius are good too. Of course you can have enough cavalry without Commander, but so you can have enough infantry without Commander. I just think cavalry has better potential.
