@ronin , Thortilla , true. I mean that the USSR had the biggest impact on the victory of the allied powers by far. Not on Japan though, although they played a big part by taking Mantšuria in the Pacific too.

usa only won thru atomic bombing japan. otherwise japan would never have surrendered I don't think so, but it would have most probably taken longer. But after Stalin invaded Mantšuria, Japan was totally stripped of natural resources. It couldn't effectively wage war anymore.

The taking of Manchuria really wasn't (as far as I know) a major factor in the surrender of Japan. On the other hand, the firebombing of all of its major cities probably was, as well as the slog called China. From what I remember, Hirohito said thet the major reason for ending the war was the firebombing. I personally don't think that the atom bombs were needed, but I would, in Truman's place, still order it to be dropped, merely because I don't know what the Japanese were thinking, as well as to scare the Commies.

The bombing of course had an impact when 160,000 civillians died in the process.

They were, but it was sort of the last nail to Japan's coffin (as we say in Finland) in terms of losing the last very important source of natural resources. Among with that the Japanese armies in China were destroyed and Japan lost their last connection to mainland Japan after losing Manchuria and Korea, which was most probably a heavy blow to morale. I think neither the invasion of Manchuria or the atomic bombs, or the fire bombings were essential for final victory, but all certainly made it come faster and easier. If I would have been Truman I would have dropped the bombs as well, but if I would've been myself as the POTUS, I certainly would've not wanted to massmurder over 100,000 people.
