Well actually I know the basics of these, like the conquering and income and food and stuff, but how about the other basics? Can you guys help me? Who are the good starting generals? What are the medals and the weird shield for? What do princesses do?

The medals are used to hire generals And the emblems are use to employ Tier 2 and 3 generals. You earn war stars from completing the campaign missions which you could use to upgrade units or sell them in the shop. For the princesses, they are unlocked from finishing conquest less than 65 rounds and more than 29 rounds. Princesses act like generals with their own field of specialty and deploy them like generals.

As ππ²πΌπͺπ΄πͺ said. Unlike other ET titles, To recruit a General, EW4 uses the academy refresh mechanic, which gives you three refresh on default. Killing units and completing scenarios earn you refresh percentage and one time refresh respectively. More could be explained Here

Please consider a contrast color for your postings - dark viola on black is just annoying. (And btw. - this board uses left aligned text)
