I have been thinking about this thread for awhile. I love the game and am happy to give the developers something to improve the gaming experience. Of the 3 ways to spend your cash (emblem, medals, slots) only the last makes sense.
I'm interested in other locations prices but in China a slot is 5 yuan while 2500 medals are 25 and 8 emblems 30.
Medals are the basic currency of the game. The fact that you earn it by doing what you love means you don't need to buy it with real money.
Not so with emblems and slots, those you need to spend real money on. I like to imagine the alternatives in combat, 1 8 emblem general vs 6 random generals (30/5). The 6 random ones always win.
Going by the above rates, 500 medals= 1 slot. 500 medals is a slightly average tier 1 general. For example,
Ballesteros spa 25 β03β
2β0β0ββ0β1β2β0βTrench 495
The added advantage you get for winning from adding a slot far outweighs the value of a Ballestros type general.
Unless I am free to playingοΌthe bang for the buck is hard to ignore once you add a fourth or fifth princess and need to cut some one. Even the seldom used Maria is worth keeping around on a cheap retainer for those rare occasions when I want a fifth cavalry or infantry general.
So then the question becomes how many slots to add. There are 8 princesses. In the end I think all of them are worth keeping around. Of the generals I think there are 5 that are worth addingοΌdepending on the player.
Arnold- There will always be a need to have a general sit in a trading city for the majority of the scenario or conquest. That's why training Lan in a 5the star stinks. She wants to be striking behind enemy lines;not exchanging iron and food to buy militia.
Fatima is a popular alternativeοΌbut instead of training 'tima twiceοΌit's smarter to just buy a Napoleonic Code which everyone can use. In terms of a part time combatant, Arnold is superior to Fatima as well.
Maybe Arnold is the most overlooked combat general in the game. The 3/1/1 stars + spy are a good start- when used on units that deal extra damage to forts. With items he can get 3 moves on all cavalry and infantry and two on artillery. Not greatοΌbut as good as any tavern or in game general.
Arnold is the key to unlocking the Princesses as soon as possible. He should be everyone`s first general. But is Arnold worth keeping around to the end?
I say yes because you still need someone to sit around and trade, he's better than the alternatives, and has above average combat value.
Oudinot/ Dobeln- even on a 12 slot team I don't see the point for either one of them. They are single use infantry generals. Victoria is a superior choice and you will eventually get her for free. Her advantage in training and movement outweigh her disadvantage in raw attack. Importantly though, let's not overlook that Victoria is a hybrid navy general with 4 stars. This frankly blows those two out of the water.
Are there scenarios where we want Victoria on a boat on an additional powerful infantry general? Are they better than hybrid trader Arnold? Are they better than cavalry hybrid Maria?
All of those are resounding maybes. So especially as compared to the alternatives- other available generals or items, I can't justify either of them.
This includes the additional infantry hybrids Yermalov and Sydney. Both good infantry hybrids and nice guys according to everyone I talked to, but neither is worth adding because if you want to add a hybrid, he's the only choice.
Ushakov- Ushakov packs a 1,2 punch. Navy is simple in that it's all stars and Navigation. You can quibble about comparative advantages but as long as a navy general has 5 stars and Navigation, they are at unambiguously at the top.
We're building a team hear and an Ushakov/ Kate/ Victoria lineup will tear through the SNS naval missions. That's her 1 spot.
Two artillery stars ain't much but accuracy and items cure all complaints. He's not as formidable as the next guy on the list but with his hybrid navy, I think he's slightly better. In terms of everyone elseοΌif you don't have accuracy you just need to sit down.
Sakurako is a slightly better artillery general because of superior movement; she gets light artillery up to 4, but, since in the rock/ paper/ scissors nature of EW4 cavalry beats artillery, you will want her available for a cavalry unit (and yesοΌas a second infantry after Victoria, Sakurako is still a better choice than wasting a slot on Oudinot/ Dobeln).
So Ushakov is a '2' as your second best artillery after Isabella (because yes, accuracy beats siege master + spy too) and the second best in game artillery general. We're building a team so having an Isabella/ Ushakov/ Sophia lineup will blast there way through the Rhine in no time. There's one candidate who could speed it along a little.
Scharnhorst- In terms of raw power Scharnhorst is the top available choice for artillery (emblem generals excluded). Isabella beats him on movement but the 4 stars, engineering, and accuracy trumps everyone else.
The only drawback is that Scharnhorst is a specialist and we already have one in Isabella. Sakurako, Ushakov, Sophia, and Kate are all competitors for artillery general and while inferior at artillery, they bring other useful skills.
And if we are considering specialist, let's not forget that just as rock breaks scissors, cavalry beats artillery.
Sulkowski or Golitsyn- You have to choose one, I'm not sure if you need both. The whole point of opening slots is to have space for one of these guys. Sulkowski gets the slight edge because for 3 emblems you can add him after completing Eastern Overlord. Golitsyn requires medals unless you plan on waiting for the 4th emblem after SNS.
Cost aside, I also like Spy more than an extra move and cavalry star. I'm sure I've made strategic mistakes for the tactical pleasure of watching Sulkowski stomp a small fort.
Berthier- At 3200 medals to fully train Berthier, the cost in medals us equivalent to opening six slots. Even if you are grinding away, you could spend the same on Golitsyn, Scharnhorst, Ushakov, and a War Horse. Berthier's advantage would be that he could run away faster.
Incidentally, opening up more slots changes the training and regrouping decisions. Your best use of medals will be on items and generals because the benefit from training is so smaller, For regrouping, you have to consider the likelihood of the lineups- will there be enough times when Lan, Sulkowski, and Sakurako won't be enough that I need to add Golitsyn? Ultimately you want to build a balanced team.
Summary:
If you spend money, buy slots and you might as well buy them all. Free Princesses and Sulkowski you get during game play. The must haves are:
Lan Sulkowski Isabella Victoria Sakurako
The remaining candidates are:
Sophia Maria Fatima Kate
Arnold Ushakov Scharnhorst Golitsyn
13 candidates for 12 spots means yes we should axe Maria for Golitsyn.
Fatima we keep for Forts and Architecture, Arnold to trade.
Use emblems for Sulkowski and medals for Ushakov, Scharnhorst, and Golitsyn.
