One interesting development was the university's bare minimum requirements for a notebook / laptop, which is easily surpassed practically everything on the market.
Stuff like i3 processors, 8GB RAM and so on...
However, it worked with external suppliers for "exclusive" deals with external suppliers for medium to medium-high tier devices. These have i5 or i7 processors, 16GB - 32GB RAM, 512GB - 1TB storage, etc.
And based on the prices, which are expensive, I think I could get something better or comparable at cheaper prices and went for it.

You don't absolutely need a laptop but you should have something that can do three things: Take notes, submit assignments, and access any apps that your university uses (usually they will have a hub where you access course material). I've seen people make do with their phone + an iPad, which I think is actually a better way to take notes than on a laptop because you get to write stuff down and move things around, etc. |
