So those who have seen my previous posts may know that I was doing a french marshals playthrough, but recently i had changed phone so i lost my EW4 stuff ( RIP 5 star trader and cavalry stars Berthier ) so in that playthrough i had as a endgame team , Ney , Grouchy Berthier and almost Oudinot. I reached as far as the American campaign , revenge of the British level. So now I restarted ( currently penisular war for france , and eylau for coalition ) with Ney , and Bernadotte who i'm making a 5 star trader , i may follow my old route to get Berthier but artillery wise i caught up on some of the guides created and was thinking either Jourdan for a infantry artillery hybrid , Grouchy a ( weirdly ) artillery general or marmont who was said to be one of the better artillery generals , so currently he is in my shop and i am delibrating on his worth and whether to get him , appreciate the feedback and other suggestions for late game ETC ( for your information i sold all campaigns stars using tsar alexander in austerlitz )

He's just so good and cheap. Might worth training upto 5 stars if it wasn't for Sophia. If you however are patient, get Sophia. She might require a bit of training, but once done, she'll be a beast.

Marmot may be best tier I general but I would still go with Grouchy. Marmot's explosive are worth an extra artillery star so damage from them is the same. Ballistics doesn't work so you really are getting just engineering and war master from Grouchy.
War master is the key for me. It's clunky to use rank items so even though On War technically is a match, it's a trade off in combat because you could be using an attack item. Also, your main artillery general will build rank quickly. Since you are playing a 4 spot game, you want your generals to build rank ASAP.
Grouchy has one more artillery move (4 vs 3) as well. With war horse and +2 horse artillery you get +6, enough to move light artillery and rockets 4 spots.

If you are keeping as an endgame gen, definitely Marmont as his skills are the best

But i can't sell away a refund skill ( at least i don't think so )

But i can't sell away a refund skill ( at least i don't think so ) Yes, with a 5β trader you can buy and sell an item wihout any loss of ποΈ as often as you want. littlecorporal's evaluations are always extraordenary detailed: Yes, Grouchy is the better buy than Marmont. For a 325ποΈ higher price, Grouchy has one usefull movement more + WarMaster. The extra artillery β is slightly better than explosive. (5/3) For artillery there is no big difference between 2 and 3 movement, but 4 movement are an improvement (Diez costs 540ποΈ). So at this point Grouchy is already in advantage. + WarMasterWarMaster will not consume one slot during your attack (only during attack you gain rank experience), You can use an additional gunpowder for example instead of On War - this is a big difference! On War can be useful for a grinding session, during the normal gameplay I prefere both slots, if possible.

My question is though when maxed which is better since like I said war master will be less useful for me since I can sell on war when not needed anymore , as compared to war master , while I'm not extremely familiar with ballistics and explosives

My question is though when maxed which is better since like I said war master will be less useful for me since I can sell on war when not needed anymore , as compared to war master , while I'm not extremely familiar with ballistics and explosives With equal β, deals Marmont avg. +3 more NetDmg than Grouchy. Average 3 dmg more, because of explosives. (MaxDmg +6 (+5 single formation) - on >65% health) Ballistics has no noticiabe effect (It seems that min-dmg has no effect at all). But this is a long way ! and Marmont will take much longer to arrive at 150HP - even with On War. He needs additional + 1 artillery Trainer and + 1 Diez more. So on equal stars, Marmont cost around 600ποΈ more than Grouchy, who has additional 3β in training. From the beginning, for the whole campaign and a few conquests will be Grouchy always stronger.

If we are looking at pure combat strength, Marmont. Grouchy's advantage is his cost and time to get promoted. I'd say the choice depends on the amount of time you have to grind for everything. The more you have, the more you should choose Marmont. If you don't want to spend lots of time upgrading him, then Grouchy.
