(This list may change over time due to future updates)General Path:
Please comment any suggestions.
Overview: My views regarding gens are based on five factors: passive skills, active skill, unique weapon, unit, and price.
Premium Gens and Deals Worth Buying:
$6.99 Richard: The best gen in the game. Manstein of Ew7, he can easily one shot most units. He unlocks the unit Knights Templar, the most op unit in the game. In addition his privilege gives you 75 medals each day and his initial reward is 2500 medals. Which can give you a headstart in buying your first general
$2.99 Saladin: Very much worth 3 dollars. He is a good Iap gen with great abilities. The only weakness is his bad unique weapon. Also, he gives you Mamluks, one of the best units in the game because at max level it can reach near 100% dodge chance, making it practically invincible to ranged units. Plus it deals a hefty amount of damage. His privilege is good because it gives you two extra attempts in territory and one extra deployment spot for gens in campaign. Meaning you can have two mercenary units
$6.99 Su Dingfang: Very much worth 7 dollars. His active, Iron Wall, is among the best. Which reduces damage by 90% for 1 whole round, making him essentially invincible to damage. Also, his privilege is decently good because it provides a significant advantage in expidition. Furthermore, the legion effects his unique unit is good because it allows him to move through mountain and forest without terrain cost. This makes him the best defense infantry general in the entire game currently.
$6.99 Genghis Khan: Very much worth 7 dollars. His active is the possibly the best in the game. It turns him into a mobile archer tower. His ability ride and archery allows him to deal damage to two enemy units nearby. This usually amounts to a combined damage of 500-800. In addition to this his regular damage is over at least over a thousand. Furthermore, he is in possession of high cav points making his damage large. His only weakness is his mediocre passives, which are well compensated for by his op active. His unique unit, the Khesig, is the most mobile unit in game with 13 mobility points. His privllage is excellent as it provides 50 medals a day. Unfortunately, his unique weapon requires some effort to get because it is locked in POH.
$12.99 Proof of Honor: Gives you over 10k medals when complete. Also, unlocks many unique equipment for gens like Baldwin, Barberossa, Nur Din, Belisarius, and Justinian. Allowing them to reach full potential. In addition, many unique units like Dragoons, Swiss harbaldiers, etc are unlocked. Also, you get hundreds if not thousands of recruitment and war gear orders allowing you to unlock units much faster. Plus this gives you Beowulf the best infantry gen in the game in addition to Caesar, another good gen. There may be even more unique weapons or gens added to POF.
Honorable Mentions If You Have Money:
Matilda, Atilla, and Chralemagne
Do not buy:
Arthur, Olga, and Wallace
(Buy in Order)Gens:
1.Roland: The best f2p melee cav gen in game. He is extremely versatile in usage for both campaign and conquest. This is partially because he can operate pretty well without his special unit, the hussar. His unique weapon is free and unlocks at chapter 3, making him good. The unique weapon can boost his cav capability points to over 100. His secondary skills are pretty suited for melee cav, but his only problem is his bad active skill looting.
2.Alfred the Great: The best f2p cav gen in game. He has a free unique weapon that can boost his cav capability points up to 100. The buffs include Cav capability and reduction, both good for a charge cav general. His special unit is Noble Calvary, one of the best F2p units available. Most importantly the cheapest legendary general in the game making him very much worth his value. His main skill is good because it decreases rampart health on enemy cities, making him extraordinarily beneficial for campaigns and hero legends, such as Siege of Jerusalem, Civil War, etc. His secondary skills, such as Rapid March and PoleArm Mastery are good because Rapid March increases mobility and Pole Arm increases damage on Charge Cav. He has only two setbacks, a hefty cost to upgrade and the skill Melee Calvary Expert, which is not suited for charge cav gens. Also, comes with a relatively easy and fun hero legend.
3.Cnut: The best f2p infantry gen in game. He has a mediocre price at around 1.9k medals. He has a free unique weapon that boosts his infantry capability to over 110 capability points. His weapon buffs infantry capability and damage reduction, this allows him to tank a considerable amount of damage. His special unit is vikings. However, I would suggest using Varangians regardless because they have more charge than Vikings and are the best unit in the game. This means they can potentially deal more damage compared to Vikings even without buff. However, this is up to you. In addition, he has a special ability called composure, which decreases enemy attack by 55%, useful when facing a high power unit. His abilities significantly boost his attack and damage on double handed melee infantry units like Vikings, Varangians, and Legion Brigade( would not recommend deploying). Also, he has an ability that gives him a bonus in naval warfare, making him a top notch naval commander making him useful for a lot of hard missions. Overall, his hero legend provides viking raiders in its raid. Like Alfred, his Hero Legend is not complex to complete
4.El Cid: The best f2p archer gen and the second best behind Atilla and on par with Saladin. Unfortunately he is quite expensive, his price is at 2.5k medals. However, he is still one of the mandatory generals you should get in game. His unique weapon is unlocked for free, boosting his damage and archer capability. His special unit is the Conquistador, which is by far the most powerful ranged infantry unit in terms of damage an f2p player can max out, but I would suggest using Mamluks on him if you are P2w. His active skill is outburst, which might seem bad for an archer gen at first, but if you put one varangian or noble cav unit on him he becomes pretty good. His secondary skills are excellent, they boost his damage by a lot. His Hero Legend is quite challenging for a new player, people especially have trouble with the second level of the first stage hard mode. To do it take the center city on the map marked by the yellow ring to damage the enemy super units. This might be hard, but a few war drums will do the hard. Then proceed to take the rest of the cities once the enemies are weakened. His hero legend hard mode raid provides Conquistadors, which is very beneficial.
5.Basil II: Originally he was a mediocre cav gen at best. However, after a major buff, he has become one of the most powerful infantry generals in the game. His unique weapon is free, but hard to get as you have to complete hard mode Siege of Damascus in Burning Crusade, which can be challenging for some. His unique weapon buffs infantry and archer points. His unique unit is the Varangian guard, the best melee infantry unit in the game. His active skill boosts his damage, which is quite good because it only costs two turns when maxed, in comparison to many other skills. His secondary skills are quite similar to those of Cnut, but at a lower level. He costs around 2k medals, an excellent general for its price.
6.Alexander Nevesky: Lite Richard, superseding the power of Alfred. He is not too far in terms of abilities to Richard himself. His unique weapon is free and obtainable through House of Angevin Second Baron War hard mode. However, it is hard for a player to get because the first few levels are quite demonic to complete. Overall his unique enquipment is not the best because it boots cav and infantry points, but at least its free. His unique unit is Boyar Calvary, which is pretty obtainable. His abilities are execellent, his active is basically a worse version of out burst, which increases charge and detour by 50%. However, it is more advantageous in someways because it can be used on other gens too. His abilities are pole arm mastery and calvary tactician, greatly boosting his calvary ability. His price is pretty expensive at 2.2k medals.
7. Timur: The most OP ranged gen in game, even outclassing IAP gens like Atilla, Robin Hood, and Saladin. He has one of the highest ranged points when maxed. His active is useful at dealing with calvary and ranged calvary by reducing charge and dodge. His unique unit Imperial Bow Cav is essential in countering powerful ranged cav like Mamluks, which have high dodge prob by reducing its charge prob by 60%. Furthermore, the stats of the unit itself are not too shabby either, as they themselves are not too far off in damage from Mamluks. His passives are also good at providing the general with more raw damage. This makes his counterattack and attack insane. Timur is also an op city cracker, able to level empty regular lvl 4 cities in one shot. His unique weapon is very accessible as it is in recovery in Constantinople normal mode. Also, his hero legend provides 40 fragments instead of the usual 20 seen in others. I would consider him to be the possibly best gen f2p players can have.
Optionals:
1.Justinian (Optional): The best admin gen in game, is very useful for grinding conquests as he has lobbyist level 2, which increases relations with all nations by 5 each turn. Even better when you buy Theadora because he gets an increase in gold production because of bonds. The reason he is optional is because he is extremely pricey at over 2k medals and has only limited usage in campaigns. In the endgame of the campaign his combat ability becomes pretty null. Plus conquest is very much possible if you have good combat gens.
2.Narses(Optional): A good buy because you can unlock his unique weapon in the free section of Proof of honor. A good hybrid archer and defense infantry general. He is useful because of his rapid march ability combined with his bond with Belisarius. This allows him to exploit Belisarius’s desperate wager and his rapid march to attack 3-4 times. The price is pretty cheap at around 1.8-1.9k medals. Plus his active skill is mediocre at best.
3.(Optional) Simeon II of Bulgaria: A medium priced and good cav gen. Although his cav capability points are low, he has excellent skills. His skills include charging cav expert and outburst, making him able to have a near 100% charge rate on certain units. However, he has two large weaknesses: the lack of unique weapons and low calvary capability. This makes his regular damage bad compared to most cav gens.
4.(Optional)Baldwin: An expensive, but good cav gen. He costs around 2.5k He has a useful and hard to master active skill that lets you swap him with another unit. This costs less mobility than usual. If you position Baldwin behind one of your units when attacking this gives you a great advantage. You are able to swap with the unit in front, allowing you to get four or three hits off the enemy. This is useful in campaigns or hero legends that require you to take a city or kill a key unit. His hero legend is quite challenging and hard to complete, but it unlocks knights of the Holy Sepreculte, which can be potentially useful. However, his hero legend is like a math puzzle or an AP Physics assignment, it ain’t easy. His greatest drawback is the fact that this weapon is locked behind POH, preventing F2p players from using him to the maximum.
5.(Optional) Fredrick Barberossa: A decent melee cav gen, but expensive at over 2k medals. You should hire him because his hero legend gives you Teutonic Knights and he can serve as a decent gen in combat. However, I would only suggest buying if you have loads of medals. His greatest drawback similar to Fredrick is the fact that his weapon is locked behind POH.
6.(Optional) Khalid: Basically Roland, but with better skills and cheaper price. However, his drawback is that his unique weapon is locked, which makes him subpar to Roland if you are F2p. However, I would definitely recommend buying if you have POH.
