I was so so so close :,) Yeah, it's very annoying. You need to take it easy and advance slowly but steadily. Maybe this post can be of help. At least you need todo only three conquests and then you can forget that they exist...

Besides what blueberry suggest, you can do this no brainer strategy that will take 80, 100 or more turns. Make 1 or 2 strong, self sufficient team that you can auto battle and have all the gen survive. Send them in one direction and take city 1 by 1.
If you are not confident with your gens or your strategy, then just make 1 team and if accident happen (gens die), fill that team with other self-sufficient gens. If you have good stock of gen, and confident with the team you set, then you can make 2 strong team.

I farmed medals, bought and upgraded gens until every F2P gen was purchased. Only 3 were not upgraded to 6* or 7*. I used the same plan, a few of my primary, best gens formed 2-4 squads to attack in multiple directions. Then, my secondary and tertiary gens formed full teams (6 units) which added about 2-4 more attack teams. The rest would form defence teams to guard exposed cities, especially those facing cities with enemy troops. In my final run, my 2-3 of my best gens are enough to form 1 attack team, with or without support. Remember to consider how they complement or support one another. Eg. I used Atilla + Saladin (with Gungnir) in one team. Then, an arty gen was probably escorted by 2 inf gens, like Barbarossa + Beowulf with Li Shimin. In fact, there was some discussion on how to face this tedious mode and era head-on in here: european-war-4.boards.net/thread/16477/ragnarok-conquest-doctrine
