I played the conquest mode a bit. There are a strategical and tactical layer in the conquest game mode. In the strategical layer you see a view of the world map, recruit units, more units around your provinces, set up a battle to attack enemy provinces, do diplomacy. Random events like good harvest, plagues will happen during the conquest.
When you attack a enemy province or a enemy attack you you get to the tactical layer where on the map you control your units and battle with the enemy units. You can use auto-battle to instantly resolve the battle but I would not recommend it as the AI does not perform very well. The defender in a battle has fortifications they can use to their advantage. When attacking you should bring some rams to get through those walls before enemy archers or towers kill your troops.
When attacking if you can try not to damage the fortifications in place too much since if you capture the province and the enemy attacks back in an attempt to take back the provinces. The fortifications will still be there and you can use them to your advantage.

So will upgrades like these (like you just showed) will upgrade everything or only selected items? Just the buildings that produce units and defenses upgrade will open up from going to a new age

I won and now I control whole of north and South America. I am thinking of planning expedition to the east next.

.org/image/bmb0f9tg3/] Here in the diplomacy screen you can see the stats of your empire and the other empires around the world. I have decided to attack Roman Empire as to stop them from getting stronger. .org/image/isuaaw7vf/] .org/image/5pynrmhnf/] First battle with Roman Empire is in the Atlantic. I lost .org/image/61wvkzn2l/] .org/image/6fy7kl765/] Roman Empire had launched an attack on one of my North American provinces. In the turns before I had seen their troops in the ocean near so I build troop there in case they attack. I defeate their attack.

This looks great actually.
It becomes deeper, and you have to predict your opponent's moves. The advantage on the defending side is realistic, as well as the Tech disparity. I'd like to stomp a nation with spearmen using muskets, ofc.
This gets a projected 5/5
