I’ve heard an opinion that many people lost their interest in EW5. I’m curious whether or not it is true.

Well, I am still interested, but now slightly less.
My main problem with the game isn't the time needed to finish it, but the growing boredom.
I am now in level 87, I still have to collect >500 literature for Gunpowder age upgrade, and until that I am not able to do anything except daily missions.
Discovery age campaigns are impossible for my generals, as well as any battle/attack/invasion.
So, for the next two months, I cannot do anything but wait, or play Greece conquest 25 times (don't know which is more boring).

The grind of literature turned me off. I didn't see the reward of grinding so diligently. So I quit.

When conquests turn out to be basically taking over the same city over and over with slight variations... I lost interest. I managed to keep playing a bit more further beyond the first completed conquest, but not so much.
(Deleted the game in less than 3 weeks)

All I do now is performing empire daily missions, getting medals, resources and literature as much as possible. Other than that, my interest towards the game has declined.

I still play, but the literature grind is horrible. As I suggested a while ago, this is probably the worst part of the game, and I feared it's what would kill it. Sadly, I appear to be right. It was great in theory, but Greece classical is the best way to farm literature until gunpowder (because discovery generals can't really speed run Empire Persia as effectively). This means that the average player will be playing the same thing, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, until the gunpowder upgrade. Doing only missions would be worse, and campaigns RARELY give you any.
The idea of literature was probably meant to keep people interested, because it means you can't just progress freely through the eras. Obviously this isn't how it turned out.

I got past all the literature grinds, and its annoying how the Gunpowder missions are chock full of them. I'm on the final gunpowder level actually.
Can't say how bad the grind was. It was horrible, but was it enough to kill the game? For many yes, for me not really.
I'm going to play until the end. Just got my second level 6 general.

Yes, the literature price is stupidly high. Should be halved, discovery age 150, gunpowder 300, industrial 500...
And there is another thing about the game: the disproportion of player level and units/age. I am now at level 88, but still in discovery (some 480 literature left), so my generals are at level 40. I understand that Battles and Attacks on empire cities should have been scaled about player level, i.e. the last cities should stay till the end, for maxed generals and best items, but not daily invasions, enemies there are at level 87-93 and it is pointless to even try...
Just a random idea. How about the resources (pearl, perfume, diamonds, etc). Are they of any use after obtaining all princesses and generals? What about resource market?
1 perfume = 2 pearls 1 china = 3 perfumes 1 ivory = 5 china 1 diamond = 7 ivory 1 artwork = 10 diamonds 1 literature = 15 artwork
problem solved (kind of...)

Also, just realized this while at the movie theatre, why does conquest suck for literature up until the Discovery era? Greece classical is the best farming country, even through Empire Persia (giving 30 lit). This is because even discovery age generals can't really match the speed of Greek classical run with Persia Empire. Therefore, you do the same monotonous auto-battling, for days and days, without variation. What was the logic behind this.

I'm going to admit something really stupid. I never Auto-battled, ONCE, before it was too late to bother. Every classical Greece conquest I did, was sending my top generals into literal auto-battles, while controlling the other aspects. Its annoying that the auto-play thing doesn't seem to do ANYTHING as a 1-star country. Apparently you need critical mass, but I've never tested it.

My Smart Phone has been broken and I can't play the game with my Nokia 3310. I've bought all Gold General and fully upgraded one of them and now my save is lost.
