Well, it depends on how well you handle them. They do, after all, follow a set path. One can easily work around the larger masses of them and take smaller cities, create a ludicrous amount of rocket artys, and/or abuse paratroopers. Will you still run into trouble? Yes. Will it be easier to maneuver around them, though? Absolutely.

I've been playing it, and won most......MOST rounds. It takes me a literal century and a half, but I still do it. It's mostly because I always stall the aliens with my insanely OP general. I gave him so much survivability that he can easily stall the aliens for a bit. Not to mention that I have Monty waiting to replace him if need be. That's a good few turns that the aliens are completely distractedXD
