Egypt 1180Some basic info: Population: Est. 7.2 million Area: Est 2,000,000 sq km. Capital: Damascus
Background info: After the victories at Jacob's Ford and Marj Ayyun, Baldwin IV of Jerusalem and Saladin have signed a truce. My RP will assume that a truce has occurred between the Crusader States and Egypt, except for that devil Raynald of Tripoli.
The Ayyubid Empire has signed a much-needed truce with Baldwin. Saladin's army is plague-stricken and the Empire's coffers empty. Saladin, seeing the anarchy engulfing Europe regarding succession of the French Kingdom, and reminded of the Great Revolt that had occurred within the Angevins, decides to formalize the line of succession. Saladin's brother Al-Adil is appointed Grand Vizier and future Regent, to preside over a Council choosing the heir to the Ayyubid Sultanate after Saladin's death. With the death of Turan-Shah, the demesne given to Saladin's sons must be reconsidered. Al-Adil too is unable to govern as he is Grand Vizier. Saladin himself is Emir of Egypt, obviously. The entirety of Syria is granted to Al-Afdal, Jordan to Uthman, Al-Aziz given the Hejaz, Az-Zahir Ghazi given Yemen. Of course, local governors govern in these mostly-children's stead. Al-Adil plans to refill the Sultanate's coffers. Firstly, taxes are reformed. A Bureau of Alms is formed, overseeing the payment of zakat from Muslims, jizya from other subjects of the Empire, and tariffs. Al-Adil himself commands this Bureau. Second, economic relations are reopened with European nations. Trade is done, from millets and rice to perfumes and spices; with tariffs of course. Branches of Italian banks are allowed to open in Cairo. Al-Adil plans a grand campaign to secure trade routes from bandits, especially the valued Trans-Saharan gold trade route. 500 Mamelukes, 1,500 horse archers, and 3,00 Nubian Levies are dispatched to Libya to secure that route, along with other regions of the Empire. Roll for success. _M0FGs8hA 15. Trade routes are secured, though military presence is still needed (albeit reduced) to prevent bandit attacks. Money flows around the Sultanate. However, the Libyan contingent is not finished. They are dispatched to the Bedouin chieftains, with a simple offer: they shall be given autonomy in governing inner Libya, the chief offered the hand of Saladin's younger brother Tughtakin, but they must pay alms. Let's see how well the negotiations go. The Bedouins in Inner Libya accept Ayyubid dominion, further securing the Trans-Saharan trade route. With gold for Africa safely in hand, the mints While the Libyan contingent thrive, Saladin's sick Kurdish and Turkish armies are disbanded. By order of Al-Adil, they are given lands to work on. Other than campaigns against banditry, Al-Adil seeks to develop the ports, roads, and defenses of the Ayyubid Sultanate. Particularly the ports along the Red Sea and the Mediterranean are developed. With trebuchets recently developed, new defenses are needed. With Al-Adil and Saladin's goal to expand economic and maritime power, debate rages between Damascus and Cairo regarding the Ayyubid Capital. Merchants demand the move to Cairo, as to better suit trade (and the fact that Cairo is de facto capital). Abbasid representatives argue against such, citing Damascus as the seat of the Emir beforehand, and a state of transition from the Fatimids. Al-Adil too seeks to expand the Ayyubid merchant navy, focusing on sturdier designs now. Trade is expected to expand the merchant navy, and Al-Adil sets a system of loans (cheap loans) for aspiring merchants to build new ships. Under Saladin's wishes, Egypt does not only expand its merchant navy. With aid from the Almohad Caliph ( Erich von Ludendorff ), military shipyards and shipbuilding advisors (along with training of sailors), in exchange for training of the Almohad army. The commander Ibn Jender is send with some mamlukes to start it off. While Egypt's navy is relatively small, a contingent of 10 war galleys and 50 transports, along with a small force of 1,000 Mamluks, seeks to remind Raynald of Tripoli regarding the truce. Let's see if he has some sense in him. Raynald refuses to accept the truce. In the end, Baldwin convinces him mid-siege. [well, I hope that happens] Saladin plans to mediate the issue between vassal emir Nur al-Din and Sultan Kilij Arslan II of Rum ( Mountbatten). Saladin offers a simple solution: The Sultan's daughter and Nur al-Din's wife would live with Kilij Arslan for six months. If Nur al-Din refuses and if the issue continues, divorce shall happen and the dowry shall be refused. Saladin attends the funeral of Caliph Al-Mustandi, and Ayyubid agents seek to influence the young Caliph Al-Nasir.
Order of Battle (TBD) Recap on the troop changes: In the campaigns of 1179, Saladin had an army of 26,000 men. Assuming the army comp at Hattin, 11,000 Cavalry and 15,000 Infantry. Of the 11,000, I'm going to guess 3,000 Mamluks/Ghulams, 6,000 horse archers, and 2,000 Noble Shock cavalry. 2,000 of the Inf are dismounted Ghulam, 5,00 archers, 4,000 spearmen, 3,000 swordsmen, and a few naft throwers. This mixed Turko-Kurdish army is disbanded. Now, we have a contingent of 5,000 in Libya, detailed in turns. 1,000 Mamluks in the County of Tripoli. Potentially, 35,000 may be raised. Regarding the navy, TBD. ···········

Venice and Hungary 1180 After the unexpected death of the previous Doge, a new Doge is appointed by the Great Council of Venice. The new Doge Marco Constante came from a relatively wealthy political family [He is fictional because I want to make my own character] and is a known to be a charismatic leader and shrewd diplomat. He immediately begins negotiating new trade deals with Poland and Burgundy. He also orders for more warships to be constructed to boost Venice’s war fleet. Lumbar for this fleet is bought from Poland. Trade with Egypt and the Almohads (thats what there are called isn't it?) is begun. Shhh we know they are Muslim's but Venice likes the monies. At around the same time a new King of Hungary is crowned, King Sípos I [Also fictional]. Sípos is a weak and inexperienced young ruler and is only 16, just barely old enough to rule. Doge Constante sends one of his closest allies, Vedasto Ponzo to King Sípos’ court. Vedasto quickly rises in the court and becomes one of young Sípos’ most trusted advisors. Vedasto works tirelessly to improve Venetian and Hungarian relations and trade between the two booms with Venice merchants investing in Hungary. Shortly after coming to power, Done Constante looks at a map of Europe and finds that he can hardly see Venice! In fact if he didn’t already know where it was and was specifically looking for it he wouldn't have been able to see it at all! “Hmmm….we must-a fix-a this-a! Time-a to take-a the land-a!” The Doge says. Venice then begins consolidation and expansion in Dalmatia. Through the year Venice slowly obtains more and more of Dalmatia both through small, brief conflicts in some instances and diplomatic maneuvering and intrigue. As a result of this we now have Aquila, Veglia and Zeng as well as Istria and Zara which Venice already owns. Hmmm now we just look like a couple of small blobs on the Adriatic Coast. You still can’t see us very well. Venice must be stronk! So we use our diplomatic, sneaky shady intrigue and deep pockets to buy Treviso, Padua and Verona ( Antonio Santa Anna I hope this is ok. Lemme know if it isn’t.). With those acquisitions the Doge is satisfied (or rather doesn’t want to take to much or else Venice may be squashed)….for now. At least now you can see Venice more or less. The Venetian Arsenal is expanded however this project is expected to take another two years. Order of Battle: Venetian Army (Professional): 5,000 [Please let me know if this is unrealistic and I’ll change it] Venetian Navy: 100 Great Galleass 100 Galleys [Again if, this is unrealistic let me know. Byz said the Byz’s had about 150 and Venice I think is a bit better so I think this is ok though maybe not...hmmm….]

Burgundy 1181:
Population:6,100,000 +100,000 from Northern Alsace-Lorraine Area:51,506 sq miles Capital:Dijon Provinces:Dauphiné, Provence, Savoy, Upper Burgundy, North Alsace-Lorraine
Army: 20,000 militia(raised in times of war) (+10,000 next turn) 6,000 men-at-arms(standing army) (+8,000 next turn) [-150 in taking Lorraine. Losses replenished next turn] 1,500 horsemen (+1,500 next turn) 2,500 archers (5,00 next turn) 350 Knights +150 are knighted an given manors and money from the Duke's own lands for valorous actions on the field of battle. 100 Catapults 75 Trebuchets
Fleet: 48 Galleys (+4 next turn) 35 cogs (+15 next turn)
Burgundy's might continues to grow as peasants are trained for war and the standing army increases in size. 10,000 militia to be trained by next year. 4,000 men-at-arms, 1,500 horsemen, and 500 archers to be trained by next year. 20,000 sets of equipment are completed for the militia army. The fleet production continues as planned at Marseiilles and Toulon. Barracks are increased in size and capacity. Better infrstructure is being built for greater recruitment of troops.(20,000 +10,000 recruitment capacity) Shipyards at Marseilles and Toulon are increased in size again. (x2 production next year:+8 per turn)
An order for 10,000 sets of militia equipment have been placed. Iron production greatly increased. Trade with Venice, Genoa, Poland, and Almohad have made Burgundy wealthy. Trade established with Egypt(perfumes, spices, and silks).
Burgundy continues to export iron, fish, wine, and fancy clothes to its trade partners and imports grain, cloth, olive oil, lumber, fur pelts, and citrus fruits.
Some portion of lumber from Poland is used in production of Trebuchets and Catapults.
War!!! The standing army of Burgundy has been ordered to march to Lorraine region belonging to the HRE. 10,000 men and a 150 Knights have gathered at the border. The army marches into Lorraine on the pretext of protecting the people and giving them a better livelihood. The army appeals to the people of Alsace-Lorraine. Rolling dice(1-3-Failure, 4-6-Somewhat successful, 7-9 major success, 10-12 Yaass!! They have completely agreed to join us!) LrcxwHwE The local force of HRE troops left in the region don't take kindly to Burgundine intervention in the Lorraine region. But as they only number around 1,000 troops, the garrison decides to retreat. Rolling dice(1-6 nope it's war, 7-12Yaass!! They have run like cowards from us!)
War it is! Our army swiftly marches towards the enemy positions and begins an attack. Since we outnumber the enemy 10:1, rolling dice(1-3 Shameful defeat, anything above 4 is an automatic victory for us).
We suffer minor casualties of around 100-150. Lorraine is now a part of our territory! We can begin extracting precious metals and iron from now.
A few dozen common soldiers and many minor nobles are knighted and given small manors in Lorraine and across Burgundy for their brave actions during the war. This encourages the peasants and makes them happy.
Due to the recent actions against the Holy Roman Empire, the Duchy of Burgundy has decided to join the Empire to prevent future bloodshed. The Duke of Burgundy also seeks to become Emperor and begins gathering allies. With Angevin support behind Burgundy, Hugh III will surely become the Emperor of HRE.

Portugal 1180 (UPDATED)(Afonso I):
Prior to 1180: -Portugal was officially recognized as a kingdom by Pope Alexander III in his Manifestis Probatum (1179). He acknowledged Afonso I as king and gave permission for them to conquer the Moors.
-Afonso I has successfully been recognized by the Kingdom of Leon after multiple attempts, and together they hold a "Non-Aggression" Pact of sorts.
-By 1143, Afonso I had secured an alliance with the Kingdom of Castile.
-Many Almohad/Moor lands have been captured by Portugal in a brutal war to get the Moors off the Iberian Peninsula. Prior to 1180 (and technically for the rest of the war unless something changes), the Portuguese are winning most of the battles. -Portugal has just had a Non-Aggression Pact with the Almohads/Moors end in 1178
Economy: Well aware that war is on the horizon, King Afonso I implements the following plan to arm the country: -If the government wishes to have something you own, you must give it to them. -Tax is increased. -Government sponsored blacksmiths and mines will open. -The oldest son of every household will be required to fight should a war come.
Political: Portuguese diplomats seek help from Aragon, Castile and Leon, and they encourage them to fight the Almohads/Moors for religious purposes. Portugal seeks help from the Pope.
Religious: The government is sponsoring the construction of large cathedrals to increase the morale by showing the soldiers what they are fighting for. Currently 2 are being constructed, and they are expected to be finished in 1200.
Military: 25,000 active duty. 45,000 are ready to be thrown into the army at anytime. Sancho I (leading military general and heir to the throne) orders a border patrol for the 25,000 active.

Economy: Trade is booming! Main exports: Grain, Lumber, Fur Main imports: Alcohol, Iron, Luxury goods, Fish, Clothing, Industrial Products Trades (Name, Our Stuff, Their Stuff): Wenecja-Węgry ( Frederick the Great ) [Lumber, Grain <--> lots of wino for them Szlachta [Nobles]) Burgundia ( Hugh III of Burgundy ) [Lumper, fur <--> more wino, fish, lots of clothes)
Internal Affairs: Casimir II commissions a university in Krakow, because educated people aren't many in Poland. Those who showed great bravery in the War against the Tyrant Mieszko were made Szlachta. Pomerania is officially incorporated into the Kingdom of Poland, because Kazimierz says so, and also because Mieszko only survived the civil war because he had a vassal supporting him. So no more vassalage for you, Pomorze! You get to swear fealty to your liege like a normal Duke. Odon is officially made duke of Greater Poland. One less province for the King to rule.
Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs: Poland, after pledging allegiance to the HRE the year before, now decides to join the HRE by annexing some parts of Vorpommern that the Pomeranian Dukes didn't get around to annexing. Why we didn't do it earlier is still a mystery. [Tagging Bismarck Jr , Antonio Santa Anna because of election stuff]. CB: 'Cause we have claims. Vorpommern is weak and small. If we don't win in a year, then either we did something wrong or they had lots of help.
Annexation of Vorpommern Small resistance is met in Anklam. Need a 4 or more to win. eqJSOSaBVictory! The defenders were allowed to disband and return to their homes because we're nice enough to let them do that. The fortress of Dimmine (Demmin) is next. However, the defenders have prepared after hearing about the defeat at Anklam. Need a 6 or more to win. A close victory. Same as in Anklam, the defenders were allowed to return to their homes. Wologost (Wolgast) is the last West Pomeranian stronghold. Storming their fortress, however, is not going to be an easy task. Need a 7 or more to win. Just when our troops were about to retreat, the defenders of Wologost surrendered. Przedpomorze is ours! The new duchy is given to one certain Jan Koniecpolski, one of the newly-made szlachta and a veteran of the Polish Civil War.·····

Egypt 1181
Libya has been secured. A Conclave of Tribes has elected an Emir of Libya under Salah al-Din's rule, and the Sultan's brother Tughtakin marries the daughter of the Libyan Emir. The original Libyan contingent continue to trickle away, leaving only 250 Mamlukes commanding Libyan levies.
With bandits dwindling and Inner Libya secured (bar Tripolitania), gold begins to flow from the Mali and Ghana Empires to the Sultanate. Trans-Saharan trade flourishes, and the mints at Cairo begin making dinars, much to the relief of the populace. More money begins to circulate (OOC note: dinars are literal gold coins; they are less likely to inflate), increasing overall prosperity.
The realm's rejuvenated economy has a double effect against bandits. Traders and caravans can afford better protection, and many abandon banditry to seek less threatening but equally profitable jobs. Local guards' importance lessens, but the bandits themselves have banded into larger groups able to sack the stronger caravans, though at less loot.
Salah al-Din himself seeks to create discord among bandits due to this. Agents and spies begin misplacing loot, informing certain bandits about vulnerable caravans, and reporting their men's treachery to the bandit-kings (OOC note: it is suspected that Saladin rose through intrigue, so I suppose he'd be quite good at this). Let's see how well this goes.

Success! Some of the bandits begin feuding among themselves. A new, vigorous campaign against bandits is conducted, Saladin commanding the campaign.
The bandit armies are routed. The paltry few that remain only squabble among themselves, too weak to attack caravans.
With that, the Ayyubid armies stand down. Military presence is reduced even more. Still, Saladin and a Conclave of Imams issue a fatwa: as the Prophet himself encouraged archery and riding in the Sunnah, all able-bodied men must practice archery four hours every week, overseen by the local Imam. Those who do not practice archery may practice riding, and even better, horse archery. Most of the equipment comes from the Sultanate's coffers.
Al-Adil's economic reforms continue. The Sultanate, while already split in Emirates, is split even more to Counties, with each collecting their own tax. A fatwa of warrants is issued, with each government official (incl. tax collectors) having warrants from the Sultan and the Imams to prove their identities.
An Honor Committee oversees the bureau to prevent corruption.
Al-Adil plans to build a system of roads. Soldiers are replaced with workers, and swords replaced with shovels. Ports too are developed more, along with the Ayyubid merchant navy.
Saladin issues a decree with regards to succession: the heir shall be elected from Saladin's sons by a Conclave of Imams and Emirs, presided by Al-Adil. For now, each son of Saladin is given his own village to run, along with education on diplomacy, arms, and stewardship. Hopefully the most competent in running his village gets chosen Sultan.
Saladin writes a letter to the Ismaili Hashasins, promising free right to worship. ·······

The Angevins 1811 Sorry about being late Antonio Santa Anna ! Smite me not, plox! Okay I have some basic research done. Editing...
Quote from Wikipedia: He ruled as Count of Anjou, Count of Maine, Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Count of Nantes, King of England (1154–89) and Lord of Ireland; at various times, he also controlled Wales, Scotland and Brittany. The Angevin Empire! I'm using some rough estimates...70 warships, and transports for up to 30k at the highest, no more. According to some various major campaigns. Kinda hard to figure out without a clear, official numbers. I'm also estimating that Henry II has 50,000 men-at-arms, 30,000 archers, 25,000 knights (not including some under command of Richard I). Presumably scattered through out his large empire... oh well lol.
Henry II has 10 children, however 2 daughters are already married away, 1 dead, that leaves: Geoffrey (currently bishop of Lincolin),"Young Henry", Richard the Lionheart, Duke Geoffrey, Prince John, William (Longespee). There is evidence to suggest that Geoffrey was planning another rebellion with Philip's help. As a participant in so many rebellions against his father, Geoffrey acquired a reputation for treachery. Gerald of Wales wrote the following of him: "He has more aloes than honey in him; his tongue is smoother than oil; his sweet and persuasive eloquence has enabled him to dissolve the firmest alliances and by his powers of language able to corrupt two kingdoms; of tireless endeavour, a hypocrite in everything, a deceiver and a dissembler." Geoffrey also was known to attack monasteries and churches in order to raise funds for his campaigns. This clearly needs to be dealt with! Owing to the pre-existing friendship between traitorous Geoffrey II, Duke of Brittany, and the newly crowned Phillip II of France... Not to mention that he participated in the Great Revolt of 1173-1174 (and of course the lousy scoundrels lost against me!)... I, Henry II, demand that Duke Geoffrey is put unto death! I send a host of 20,000 strong (mixed composition) to Nantes. Rolling... need a 7 to break into Nantes and seize Duke Geoffrey. T2mEgWavResults: Seven. A success, we're in, good good. He is executed for his multiple crimes which are too many to count! *chop* Here lies Geoffrey II, Duke of Brittany, 23 September 1158 – 19 Feburary 1181. Okay done! I appoint Prince John to replace him. The Bretons however rises up in revolt because Constance is the heiress duchess of her father, and Geoffrey II became duke only by marriage. Rolling to see how severe the revolts happens to be this time (surely not my first time, bah! I shall crush them once more!) 1 is fairly weak, 6 is a surprisingly strong revolt that raises a small army that will require serious military action to overcome. Results: Oh crap... it's a five! My men will have to fight down the revolt, no doubt about that! Need a five to break some skulls and disperse the rebels in a battle: Results: Whew... the revolting Bretons are placated for now.
Need to mention that Hugh III of Burgundy is considered one of my court favorites and I support his enrollment into the HRE as a ruler of a member-state. Also, Marisallie is designated as my favored port of trade for imports and exports coming in and out of Francia and the Mediterranean. This will increase the traffic and commence between Burgundy and Ost-Francia (my Western half of France). ····
