I remember getting my medals from achievements. But yeah I agree, there is definitely a point where your progress slows down to a halt. My advice is to use the tech you get from the daily tasks to upgrade your technology tree as much as you can. I would still get Guderian if you can, and the later sell the useless generals. He is really strong even with no medals equipped. Definitely sell Messe.

Messe he is worse than guderian, even when guderian is sleeping That's because Messe is a bronze tier general, Guderian is gold tier, and the best in the game. He's good as a starting general until a player can afford Guderian.

I just got Guderian, what should I put on him? I'm thinking of rumor and plains fighting, or explosives.

It gives a max of around +15 HP which is nothing compared to the health he usually has. Edit: Crossfire seems pretty good as well. Is it?

Count how much damage you receive on average/turn. If you receive 50 damage/turn 15 health would be 30%, which makes it 3x as effective as cover (which covers on 10.8%/turn on average)

You've got me at least interested. I have the not-so-grand total of 6 medals, and am temporarily going for unlocking skills, and have time to think about it.

I've had to reset my progress in WC4 a total for 4 times so far (thrice on my old phone and then I got a new one) and I've found that going straight for Guderian as your first general is the best path if you're not buying Manstein. It's surprisingly easy to scrounge up the 2935 medals with no generals, I've managed to do so 3 times with success.
The strategy is to shoot for achievements, you can get 50 medals for beating Germany 1939 conquest and 500 more if you can get an A rank. Finland 1939 bags you 150 more, bringing you from the 800 medals after the tutorials to already 1500 medals.
In scenarios, getting through to at least level 6 on both Axis and Allies will guarantee another 360 medals, bringing your total to 1860. Doing the challenges in Domination can bring you up about 300-400 more medals, leaving around 700-800 medals left. Exercises can realistically only bring about 100 medals at this point in the game. Beating a 2 star conquest for 1939 (my preference is Romania) brings another 100 medals for the achievement, which means only 500-600 medals left to go.
What's left is really just running that last lap, clawing your way through the Soviet vs German scenarios and trying out those difficult challenge missions. Invasions can bring you medals in little by little, starting on them early helps, and patience being the key. Beating the Famous generals discount missions can also secure some more medals, Rundstedt and Dowding's missions in particular because they're easy.
A bonus, if you're on an Android device, the Google Play version of WC4 grants bonus resources and medals for watching ads, and you can pocket 30 medals per day by watching those. (This is making my most recent run a breeze)
Eventually, the glorious 2935 medals will arrive, and those pesky scenarios will be squashed under the might of Guderian. Guderian makes running through the missions easy, and with the addition of rumour and a decently upgraded tech tree, WW2 Pacific is fairly simple without any other generals, although rushing to beat Konev's discount missions and placing rumour on him is a preferred next step.
I got halfway through Cold War with just Guderian and Konev, with Guderian being maxed on Armoured Assault, Blitzkrieg, Panzer Leader, and Rumour and Konev on level 5 Accuracy and level 4 Rumour. Using the spoils of war from beating the hard missions for WW2 Europe and Pacific helped to fund those upgrades, and the high level rumour on those two secured a surprisingly easy win on the Rommel 40% discount mission, adding another fine addition to the dream team.
In summary, Guderian is bestest boi, give some love to your Guderian and he'll be the bestest of the best. All the homies rush Guderian, rush Guderian and you'll be conquering the battlefield in no time.

I just got Guderian, what should I put on him? I'm thinking of rumor and plains fighting, or explosives. Rumor is a must, then for his fifth skill, you can add after you upgrade all his base skill and Rumor at least to level 4 (it's better to go deep than go wide). For mine, I added explosive as his fifth skill, since Guderian and Konev are the first gen to crack the city.

I used rumour and explosives. I tried out Machinist and ended up ABSOLUTELY hating it. Save it for Graziani.
