Hey, I just recently just exchange Guderian's machinist for plain fighting. Several reasons:
1. He's already good at surviving with blitzkrieg (+medal) and rumor, so giving him machinist only makes him too passive. In early games we need to gain momentum by dealing destructive damage to enemies and secure resources (cities and industries).
2. Plain fighting deals more damage and helps him assault enemy units. It's also unaffected by the perspective unit's health (unlike armored assault), so it makes his damage more durable.
3. plain fighting also works on cities, so he can heal in cities while attacking enemies at the same time (with extra +25 damage).
Even in terrorist conquest I find him very useful in early-mid games, but pretty useless in mid-late stages. And guess what? He still survives well after mid games (without machinist). But I think machinist on Guderian might be more useful than plain fighting in some cases where you need survivability so badly, like Cuba 1980. Anyways in most cases I find it more useful for him to have plain instead of machinist.

Aside from having modded skills HP-Up is not worth investing in, so that is a good call. Guderian is top of the game no matter what.

Guderian is OP, helped me in WW2 pacific in ALL campaigns (except for most of europe campaigns (not including Destination Berlin)), also helped me in some battles (battle of kiev battle of libya) exercises General missions. Save up for this guy and is gonna be worth it. Took me 2 months to get him which was a long time, put rumor on him and he will be a beast. I have him and Konev and are both Overpowered.

Note that in addition to his skills, he has 3* in air, meaning that unless you count Nimitz, Yamamoto or Dowding, he is also useful for air if need be. (Eg. Carrier gen in Nimitz discount missions) 2nd best tank general in game! Give him rumour and plain fighting 2nd best....................... who are you, guderian is number 1! |

If I buy Guderian, I will be left with practically no medals, but I already have Manstein, Leeb and Kuznetsov, the latter two having max Rumor. Guys, do you think it would be a good idea to get him? yes cuz the hard missions will become more easy and he will spam attacks  so get him |

Guderian is a spearhead. He should be used agressively as his speed affords. My choice skills for him are rumor and explosives, crossfire or plainfighting. Let's face it, he will be in the thick of things before any support can catch-up so, do damage then move to next target as the rest of your troops do mop up. Crossfire is no joke on Guderian, and explosives is a lot of fun cracking cities, your choice. Machinist really? Use hospital instead. Guderian has tanks and speed, use skills that compliment this. Rokos base skills are different so different skills should be considered. Rommel has base skill crossfire, let him fight units and make him hit hard.
In modern war, a month ago, it took me over 140 rds as 3* USA. My 2nd try was today as 2* Germany and rocked it in just over 40 rds. Guderian, Konev, Arnold, and Runstedt starters followed by Rommel, Roko, Leeb and Donitz. None are anywhere near max skills and no gens were lost. I used each as a specialist in his own field; I don't do hybrid.
Once you stop the initial onslaught and resources start coming in, your Generals can be put out to pasture while you finish off map with air power.
