Iron Duke, 𝘛𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘴𝘬𝘺, and 3 more like this

For those mid gamers who struggle with the challenge, I like to share my experiences and maybe keys to success. I hope it’s an additional help.
Don’t take my generals, speed or items as a requirement. I was over-prepared and many players have done it with less. I wanted an easy play through.
First of all thanks to kanue for the great guide...
european-war-4.boards.net/thread/692/hre-1798-running-princesses-guide
...and Antonio Luna for the refinement of the above and detailed manual to get a fast start.
european-war-4.boards.net/post/153498.
With both strategies combined I finished in round 28 with Lan, one cash round later with Victoria. Antonio’s tip to trade metal for gold right at the start to get an instant guard cavalry for the Spanish front is great. I also never realised before AI might change undesired moves just by reloading. So praying is not needed.
Lineup
Golitsyn (not regrouped) for France/Spain
Sophia (4*arty, 5*move!) for Italy and France mop up.
Isabell (5*arty, 2*move) for Greece and Turkey.
All 150 Rank / 10 Nobility
while Isabella with Accurate is imo best suited for the mountainous Greek terrain, I found Sophia’ Siege and Spy perfect for Italy and clearance of France.
Items
Napoleonic code, army tent, helmet, curass, powder mix, cavalry sword, snare drum, war horse, saddle, horse artillery + oak wheel ! No top attack, but fast. Imho speed is more crucial than +6 attack. I recommend excessively switching and sharing of items.
Edit: maybe a lot of unnecessary spoilt stuff. I was better safe than sorry. A lack of defense items and tents can be compensated with Medipacks. Absolutely mandatory imo are War Horse, Snare Drum and speed items. Attack-items are nice-to-have
I believe AI is more likely to leave buildings out of reach unprotected. So always remove speed items before AI turn. Every
capture without fight saves a precious round.
Speed/Strategy
No risk no fun. Your leader‘s job is to kill generals, penetrate fast into enemy territory, capture key buildings and immediately advance again. They are spearheads, consolidation and sideshow must be done by following or new built troops. Never stop! None step backwards!
With move items my generals were faster than all HRE troops. So Isabell and Sophia played solo, damaged but DIDN’T kill building defenders. The followers did the capturing.
edit:
Battle Tactic
No pain no gain. Since no HRE troops can keep up with my Art gens I used them very aggressive. Positioning in reach of a weaker enemies provokes attacks during AI turn. My retaliation works like an additional round for me. Next round the attacker is either dead or left as an easy kill for my following troops. Therefore Isabella and Sophia need high HP and nobility. This works best with Sophia and forts. Don’t try this tactic with enemy cavalry and strong units and avoid getting flanked.
Careful use of HRE generals
Safety first. Don’t overcharge them. Compared with own trained gens they’re frustratingly weak. But always paired and pointed on the right minor targets they can do the job. Just use any advantage, artillery support, flanking, encircling, terrain evasion, fortifications, decoy forts etc.
Italy group
With Napoleon and Marmont threatening Italy Sophia needs strong support. Therefor Archduke is needed here much more than in Greece. Both must be stopped before they can land. Afterwards Sophia moved to France to kill the fort general and help to mop up. I kept Archduke close to Rome (see Income/Trading).
France/Spain group
After killing Dumouriez and Moreau only the faster Klenau und Hotze followed Golitsyn. Hotze separated at Lyon, took empty Clermont, Bordeaux, finally Barcelona and the fort on the Balleares. Klenau took North Spain, Golitsyn Madrid and the south. The slower August & Davidovich stayed in Northern France, August pounded Paris, Davidovich the costal Forts to help the British. All avoided the dangerous French fortress general and left him for Sophia.
Poland/Denmark group
Antonio Luna’s plan to use Deroy & Rosenberg for Poland and Denmark worked way better for me than kanue’s. Denmark is passive, I concentrated on Western Poland before. Dombrowski died fast and two generals assure a fast victory in Norway. For Turkey they are too slow.
Greece/Turkey group
Isabella on heavy artillery, Lusignan, Single heavy cav and dbl. light infantry take Belgrad and Athen. Later guards Inf, built in Clujnapoca, meet the group at the Istanbul fort.
Timing
I spared Madrid, Paris, the large French fortress and Denmark pretty long, until the surrounding area was cleared and enough forces for a fast capture were gathered. (On the other hand it s better for income to have big cities asap) But finally France, Spain, Denmark fell in the same round, Poland and Netherlands 2 before, Ottoman one after. So timing was good.
Benefit from allies work
I managed to steal Amsterdam, Kopenhagen and Warsaw before my allies could take it. That’s a significant additional income. So always try to have a light artillery for a final shot and a little infantry near a city besieged by your allies.
Medi packs
I kept all HRE generals and some key units on top health. It cost me approx 300 medals for medi packs, bought in campaigns. Since that doesn’t burden my conquest economy, it’s better than building reinforcements to help weakened generals. Lan & Vic are worth it. (But better don’t waste medals on your first try)
Better have 3 save slots
One before, one after each of turn, plus one for each S&L attack. So you can redo your actions if you made a mistake. Work systematically front after front so you don’t miss anything. AND DON’T FORGET TO KEEP A SAVE OF THE FINAL ROUND!
Save & load
It’s a kin of cheat but I admit I used it excessively. Annoying, takes ages but is worthwhile. Getting a max attack eliminates obstacles faster. Your troops live longer, rank up faster and get tougher. I didn’t lose any valuable unit. It saves round too. It’s up to you.
edit: incase you become demoralized by an attack it’s not a inevitable result. Load Ai turn again until you only receive damage without demoralisation. When you get flanked, load your last turn again and redo your positioning.
The same applies for undesired AI moves that may cost you additional rounds. Check around after each AI turn and reload incase it happens. AI might act different in the same situation.
Typically examples: Huarte leaves his port and attacks Marocco; Ships flee into the blue; Napoleon lands in Tunesia instead of Italy. There’re other frequent examples in Antonio Lina’s guide on top.
Budget priorities
You have only one budget for all frontlines. Each round, after you got an overview what happened during AI turn, follow 3 steps. From round 22/23 you shouldn’t spend anymore money.
Income & trading
From round 20-22 you also need to observe your income and consumption every round. you can’t have more than 9999 gold, spillover is lost. Calculate how much you need to sell to avoid overflow and trade it for metal. Food income is added first, then consumption is suptracted. After Napoleon and Mormont were dead I kept Archduke C in Rome. He has 3* in business for better changing ratio.
Reinforcements
I built only few but therefore tough guard infantry/cavalry and light artillery to attack, cheap line Infantry for defence. Guards are imho the better investment than grenadiers. They attack harder and kill targets faster. So they get less damaged and can be used for other targets after. Again, the list isn’t meant to be copied, just to show how a balance between saving gold and enough troops can look like. It doesn’t need hundreds of throwaway units.
Clockwise:
edit:
Final clearance:
Gather 2 or 3 units in reach before attacking a fort to eliminate it asap with least casualties. Surrounded on 6 sides it doesn’t even retaliate, like all enemies.
𝘛𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘴𝘬𝘺 discovered how to reduce the annoying fort spam of almost defeated nations, by leaving a few of its fields/farms unconquered.
european-war-4.boards.net/post/240665/thread
i haven’t tried it. When it works it can save a few precious rounds in a speed run and make the difference between success and a close failure!
Good luck, bad luck
Prussia stayed passiv. Russia took ages to join the fight but Portugal fought bravely and lost no ground. And while Dobeln and Nelson died disappointingly early, I was lucky with Napoleon. Somehow Sardinia kicked his & Marmont’s *Auto corrected* until both fled! They never reached Italy. Bonaparte suicided during AI turn. Marmont took me only a Frigate to finish. So Sophia was available to help in France early.
Thing might run different. After all fortunate and adverse events will balance, despite Murphy’s law.
Fortune is with the bold!

You have only one budget for all frontlines. Each round, after you got an overview what happened during AI turn, follow 3 steps. From round 22/23 you shouldn’t spend anymore money.
- Build only what is definitely needed in the next round to hold
- Upgrade lvl 3 cities or higher, then factories, than smaller cities, stables only when heavy cav is needed. (Kanue’s guide includes detailed explanation how many rounds it takes until a fascility upgrade pays off.)
- When gold is leftover, build what you may need some rounds later. Don’t wait too long to recruit units you finally need for clearance just to save money.
Income & trading
From round 20-22 you also need to observe your income and consumption every round. you can’t have more than 9999 gold, spillover is lost. Clockwise:
- 1 dbl guard Infantry (city south of Clermont) to help Hotze
- 3 dbl light artillery (east of Paris) to siege Massena. 1 helped to capture Amsterdam before.
- 2 dbl guard cavalry (stable east of Madrid) to encircle Joyes with Golitsyn.
- 1 light artillery (Brunswick), 1 trpl guard Infantry (Kiel), 1 frigate (Rotterdam) helped Deroy and Rosenberg in Denmark.
- 2 dbl light cavalry (polish noname city) to take Warsaw with Russian help and hunt the forgotten artillery.
- 2 trpl guard infantry (city south of Clujnapoca) for the Istanbul fortress, the port right of it and the north of turkey.
- 2 dbl guard cavalry, one light artillery (Greece) for Athen and the south of Turkey.
- 2 dbl guards (Vienna) for the fort south of it.
- Maybe 3or4 dbl line Infantry to hold cities against minor attacks.
- 2 dbl light cavalry (Weilburg) to contain desperate Desaix in Zurich until his end.
- 1 Frigate (Rome’s port) for Marmont.
- a few wooden Forts to distract the French fortress general while passing
