GCR is one of few ET games worthy to be replayed from time to time. And I am going to do it right now. My plan is to complete the game as soon as possible and to reach top 10 positions in GP conquest rankings.I am really curious how long it will take.

My first step is to choose a path for my Commander. I don't think there are "right or wrong" ways when we choose specialization of our Commander. But my plan is pretty straightforward: 1. Our Commander is our best general. So, I want him to attack as often as possible. 2. Cavalry in general attacks more often than other types of units. 3. Attacks (and counterattacks) of my Commander should be critical as often as possible to maximize his overall damage. So, my idea is to create a Cavalry general with high critical rate probability. Again there are many ways to equip our Commander. In my case I will choose this together with Tripod (a new item we get for completing one of Decisive battles). In combination with Assault it should increase eventually crit rate of my Commander by 40 percent.

"Jon Snow" and company Every f2p player has a dilemma right from the start - what to do with daily missions? Obviously our Commander can't complete them alone. There are basically two solutions: 1. To wait until you can get a couple of decent generals and then to bother with daily missions. 2. To hire cheap generals like Pacorus (Trebonius, Pedius) and to complete daily missions right from the start of the game. I firmly believe the second way is preferable. We don't loose anything by hiring cheap generals, whose price is under 100 medals. They are helpful everywhere, they can help us to complete daily missions and we can dismiss them when their services are no longer needed. Our losses are insignificant or even nonexistent if our cheap generals helped us to complete a dozen of missions.

First "big" decision Now when I have 600 medals I can hire my first "endgame" general. Again, several options are possible, but a rule of thumb is "if you don't know what to do - buy Pompey the Great". He's really a great general with an almost optimal set of skills for an Infantryman, and two of his skills can be strengthened with a single banner. No-brainer... You simply can't be wrong with hiring Pompey. Now I can farm first Decisive battles. And that means 30 medals per day additionally. Really useful for new players.

"Comrade" Drusus When the game was just released we had serious debates back then about the real value of Drusus. Long time passed, but I am still certain that Drusus is a very reliable,"easy to use" archer, who will not let you down no matter what. The factor of moral is very important in GCR though some players tend to underestimate it. The secret of Drusus is that his high moral synergizes well with increase of his critical rate. A simple crossbow will increase his critical rate by 35 percent (by 40 percent with banner). So, his damage always will be high. Late in the game Mithridates fully upgraded and equipped with golden spear and tripod can outperform Drusus. But it will take time and tons of medals. Thus Mithridates can wait for now...

Commander with this skill setup attacks multiple times very frequently and shield wall saves a ton of health in both offense and defense. Insane skill.

"In the shadow of Pompey" As I said, Pompey is almost an ideal Infantry general. But, with all honesty, most of the time we need rather specific skills, than overall power. That's because most of the time we try to take cities and/or to defend them. And Crassus is very good at doing both. Moreover two of his skills can be improved with a single banner. So, Crassus is my next general. Now I can farm deceive battles of "Sertorian war" campaigns. And that means additional 40 medals per day.

Commander with this skill setup attacks multiple times very frequently and shield wall saves a ton of health in both offense and defense. Insane skill. There are two reasons, why I prefer cavalry. First, I really don't see any "ideal" cavalry general amongst existing generals. Antony is fast, but one of his skills is useless and his overall damage is questionable, since he is unable to increase critical rate of his attacks. Arminius, Huo and Scipio can hit pretty hard, but they are rather slow, especially when commanding heavy cavalry, or vulnerable when commanding light cavalry. There are quite fast Infantry generals on the other hand, like Pompey and Crassus, and all of their skills are quite useful. So, I feel my general can contribute more as a cavalry general than as an Archer or Infantryman. Second, cavalry has the highest attack in GCR, and has a decent chance to repeat an attack after destroying an enemy unit. Survivability of cavalry in general is a problem, since we don't have something like "formation" for cavalry, and "guerilla" is not a consistent skill to relay upon. But since we have other means now to maintain the health of our general and he's fast enough to retreat if needed, I think, it is possible now to concentrate all our efforts on his attacking potential.

He is simply a slower but stronger and tougher Crassus. The only problem I can see is Legatus, but you yourself have made numerous arguments as to why that is forgivable. Give him Shield of Thunder (easy to get) and Fasces of Power, or even just Scale Armor and he takes almost no damage.

I respect Sertorius as a hero of late Roman Republic, but I simply can't hire a general with a completely useless skill. It is a shame that they weakened so many interesting generals by giving them one trash skill. Besides, I was looking for a particular player, if we may say so, on a particular position in my team. I needed a general who is very good at capturing heavily defended cities. And no-one is as good in this respect as Crassus.
