Just tried it again and yes it works, just defeat saladin Note: I did not notice when I passed it originally but fredrick dies when he crosses the river, just like the historical events. Neat Apparently he should give you a unit before disappearing but it did not happen for me…

Glad it worked. Generally speaking sometimes you just have to wait that your units and gens are upgraded and come back to pass harder missions, often times it is just about having strong enough units.
That being said, I just replayed stages I and II and the strategy is probably as follows: - Stage I: do not engage the yellow special units in the main path they will not attack you if you stay away. Instead focus on the castle with the yellow circle, once you beat it it opes a path on the right and you can sneak behind the yellow squared units, and go take the two cities required from the back. - Stage II: just beat the one guy. Lowering his morale (with cav or special equipment) should help a lot.
Hope this helps, gl!

Here is another discussion on the topic: european-war-4.boards.net/thread/18598/battle-golpejera-cid-hero-legendI did not notice when I replayed it but 2 paths open when you take the yellow castle: one on the right where the castle is, and another one on the left. So keeping some gens on the left to use them to take the north west city when the path opens is probably the right way to do it!
