You make a server and then invite your friends or they join you from the server list. The max player amount is 256 and mods like ET work in MP too

I get rekt by an army ten times smaller than mine Mountains and river crossings would do that. Though with the hoi3 ui half the playerbase probably missed research.

HOI is by far focused on military alone, unlike EU4 or Victoria 2, which are more focused on stuff like Diplomacy, colonization, etc. HOI only spans from 1936-1946, virtually the time span of WWII (shave off a few years). Due to this, military is focused on much more. Because of this, the military aspect is far more complicated which is why stuff where only a few divisions can fight at a time. In HOI, you have a better chance at winning again the enemy with only one division than ten divisions because you get a 'stacking penalty' where you gain a combat penalty for having so many divisions all target one spot.
So step #1: Don't merge divisions together to aim against one target most of the time. Step #2: Always, and I mean ALWAYS, cover the front completely. If there's a break in the line, reinforce it and cover it.
