My Backstory:
The Island was ruled by rival warlorlds/Nobles, each with his own land fighting others. In 1834, they signed a treaty. This treaty put them in a Loose Confederation, with a leader that was utterly dependent on a Parliament of the various Nobles to make decisions.
In 2014, a Revolution began. The leaders were mostly Military men, but some Civilian Nobles joined them. They seized power in the provinces, and took the cities. After a period of Martial law, and many executions, a King was elected and the new Civilian Government, with a Central Executive, was established. Many old Nobles were executed, and their territories were given as upgrades to loyal Revolutionaries.
1991: Confederation (what we were before the Empire) Consolidates the Railways into the "Big Four" companies (inspired by a 1923 event in Britain).
1945: Confederation declares neutrality
1944: Confederation forms Air Force as separate Branch
1942-1945: Confederation sends Troops to fight in WWII
1924: An Airport is built
1920: City-State (name, next to little Island) is annexed
1900: A national Army and Navy are formed
1888: Railways begin to be built
1848: Separatist uprisings in the Northeast are defeated
1834: The Warlords unite in the Confederation
1817-1833: The Warlords fight each other in the 2nd Civil War, tearing the Island apart.
1816: the Picard family immigrates to the Island
1813-1815: Island Troops fight for the Coalition, ensuring that Britain does not occupy us
1754-1775: The 1st Civil War is waged, and ends inconclusively.
1704: The Island gains independence from the Habsburgs and soon breaks into Sovereign pieces
1656: the Habsburgs take over the Island
The Revolution
On October 28, 2013, a cadre of military officers, fed up with the inefficient Confederacy, met in Nouvelle-Amiens. They were: Fleet Admiral Frederick the Great, Field Marshal Napoleon Bonaparte, Ivan Kolev, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. General Laurent de Gouvion, and Vice Air Marshal Yi Sun Sin. They planned a Revolution, and outlined their principles.
On February 5, 2014, Frederick the Great had tied up the President of the Confederacy and the Commander-in-Chief at a meeting. Meanwhile, Jean-Luc Picard sent the Fleet into the Capital, and Laurent de Gouvion's troops took the Government Ministers captive. Ivan Kolev soon secured the palace. This caused the President to abdicate, but some Generals resisted the new Government. Riklän and Astato were loyal to the old Regime, and the South was occupied by it. Battle lines were drawn, and a war began.
Riklän-based troops took the Northwest, and much of the Northeast, besieging New Zion. Jean-Luc Picard commanded a Gallant, but hopeless, resistance. The Old Regime troops were at the gates of Nouvelle-Amiens when the Riklän troops turned on them. Why? The Confederacy executed the Duke of Riklän. Large surrenders took place in Chancellorsville and Älvstad, and New Zion was saved
In the Northeast, the War was fierce. Small Garrisons in Mapuchguay were trapped by large forces. The Mountain area saw Brother fighting Brother. The Old Regime was triumphant, until New Zion forces crossed the Mountain and took the Area. The Old Regime used a Scorched-Earth Policy, but still had to surrender. This marked the end of War in the North.
Meanwhile, stabilization in the Capital was progressing. Laurent de Gouvion, Frederick the Great, and Napoleon Bonaparte formed the Committee of the Change. It governed, organized army, and began a stream of Executions. Guillotines were brought from Nouvelle-Amiens, and 6000 heads were cut between April 10, 2014 and November 17, 2015. This was not as extreme as the Reign of Terror, but was hardly benign.
On October 28, 2015, Operation Jealousy was launch. The plan saw Sherman drive South from occupied Astato, Gouvion St. Cyr march from the Capital, and Picard land on the Southern tip. After prolonged battle, the last Confederate Garrison surrendered on January 9, 2016.
Prolonged reconstruction took place, and government was properly established in Spetember of 2016. The Revolution was over
