That's a shame. Getting your conquests wiped is extremely annoying when you were on your way to victory. ew6:1914 moment

Congrats! I'm sure you'll love him, he will help you a lot in 3 staring/completing hard mode missions that you haven't already done.

I gave him rumor and explosives. Some people prefer plains fighting over explosives but I personally like the ability to destroy buildings. Although, only get rumor now and get explosives when you already have a decent team such as Konev and Nimitz

This guy is unarguably the best tank general and the most OP and useful general in the game. Manstein is inferior to him because, well everyone knows, rumor.. Guderian has the OP trinity as his base skills (Blitz, panz leader, AA). For beginners and new players, Guderian is your destiny. After you get him, he will be your greatest means for your in-game purposes. You will have a lot of fun using him in battles. He has 6 star tanks, 5 movement (damn he's fast), and 4 star air force (max).
To get him, I highly recommend the classic Messe-Leeb combo. I do NOT recommend buying Vatutin as he won't last at your HQ 'till the end (Vatutin is very slow along with his weak health without any defensive perks).
As for the other two empty skill slots I highly recommend rumor (obligation) and machinist (HIGHLY recommended). Some people may argue that he should get plain fighting, explosive, or cover. But machinist is DEFINITELY the best you could ever give him. Why? Because Guderian must be able to fight anywhere, adapt to any roles (which happens a LOT in the battlefields), and keep his health in order to survive.
The problem with plain fighting is he won't get any nice coverages from enemy tanks and artillery. He also can not be that useful in other terrains and cannot defend and get hp supplies from the city. While explosives may not be that useful as terrorists in the modern war don't have any fortifications (only cities). There are slim chances you would face a problem attacking enemy cities and there are no other benefits besides that. Aa for cover, it is much inferior to machinist because at max level it only covers around 10% damage you receive. Machinist is definitely better than that, it can heal 15hp/turn. Unless you get an average damage more than 150 hp/turn (which means 1500 damage in 10 turns) machinist is still better than cover. Machinist is multiple times more useful than cover. You can do the math yourselves to prove it.
And guess what? After I give him rumor and machinist, he is a literal BEAST. Super high damage output (AA and Panz leader with medals), almost invisible when attacking (Blitz+medal), uncrackable (machinist), and fast (with an airpower bonus). Not to mention, rumor plays a very important role along with Blitzkrieg.

Sun Li-jen of the Glorious RoC, that is where you are wrong, explosives affect both forts and cities If you are able to use your troops well and wisely, mid-game, end-game, conquests, end-siegs or even speed running can be done more efficiently with rumor + explosives.

I know, I understand explosives affects fort and city, that's why I brought it into consideration in the first place. But in the modern war, you don't need a speed run, you need to keep your generals alive and survive as much as posible while dealing rumors and high damages to the enemy. The enemies' cities will never be a problem in modern war, you should be more concerned about your generals' survivability and dmg output. If Guderian's health were decreased until 50%, his output would go down as well. With machinist, you can heal 300 hp in 20 rounds (that's greater than you may think it is). Trust me, I once underestimated machinist as well, but through calculations and battlefield analysis I find it very useful.

If players can easily go through modern war without machinist on Guderian, I dont understand why his speed running capabilities should be limited since after you have completed the game, thats the only course of action and entertainment to partake in. Besides, if both explosives and machinist benefit the general (you cant really cross-examine them since they both do wonders to two very different aspects), but one is more viable for any part of the game, whether end-game or record-contesting, then I would say go for explosives.
