My commander is inf now. Many posts have recommended to start as inf and switch to archer for mid- to endgame. But how could I switch without a big loss, after I used scrolls on him I could have used for others? And left plain, without scrolls, just to save the switch option, his low rank would’ve made him pretty weak for a big part of the game.

The best method is making a universal general with 4 universal skills. Those are march, terrain, siege, and another skill like counter or hide at a low level. Then once your commander is a strong enough level, you can swap counter for a commander skill. That’s the cheapest method, but march won’t be affective till lvl 2 in conquest, and lvl 3 in campaigns. So you need to upgrade it to lvl 2 and give your commander the march medal.

So the time to switch is over. I knew before and choosed this path for many good reasons. He’s already good now, with higher rank he’ll be awesome. nevertheless it would be nice to have one fast archer for a new way of play. Well, I’ll live with it and maybe restart after I finished. Until midgame I progressed very fast.

But no you did not make any mistakes.

But no you did not make any mistakes. All good. I’m not at all unsatisfied with my choice. I wanted a city destroyer plus 1on1 capability, hence better than Crassus. His infantry skills are those I like most. The scrolls were free and cheap to complete. Now he only needs to rise the rank to be the best inf gen for my play. I waited long enough to make a well-considered decision. But I’m an optionally thinking guy, so I still have in mind a total different path would’ve had a lot of benefits, too. Since we have only one DIY commander every choice is a compromise. Until the final skill setting commander is 2. choice when you have purchased good generals. At a certain point he must be finally specialisted to get the full potential of a path. Limited to universal skills my commander was a line filler. Now I start to prefer him over Pompey when I have to choose. You can’t have both switchability and high class forever.

I think Calvary is the best for f2p players as we don’t have Hannibal.

What else do you suggest? We have Pompeius and Vercingetorix for infantry and Mithridates VI and Octavianus for archers. I want my commander to be as powerful as possible and attack as much as possible, so cavalry is the best choice. His skills are about the same as Belisarius', but the talent and aura buff make him significantly better.

I'm just saying, that we have not one but two cavalries made amazing in this new update, Huo with Minerva, and Belisarius with Apollo. There is no need to put your commander into cavalry. In fact, one can make your commander into anything. Even Navy, for crying out loud, whatwith the Neptune banner now.

Well we don't have to put our commander into anything, but since he is potentially tge most powerful general in the game, I prefer him on a healthy, common, mobile, powerful and frequently attackung unit, cavalry. Also, the banner of Apollo will suit Commander even better if you give him Charge.

Gerd von Rundstedt this is my current Commander build, the banner of Apollo suits him very well. This is my lineup for land campaigns. I'll get Ocatvianus as a second archer gen, I'm currently using Cleopatra instead. You can deploy 8 generals max, so I think you have to have 3 cavalry, 3 infantry and 2 archers. Archers are rare and die fast. Infantry is slow and there are already Vercongetorix, Pompeius and Crassus. For cavalry there are Arminius, Antonius and Scipio, but I think cavalry is the best unit for the Commander, so I haven't got them yet.
