As from the title suggest i decided to do a playthrough in ew4 ( keep in mind i have not gone pass HRE campaign yet ) with mainly French generals , some may remember i have done this in ew6 and with me beating the game quite recently with that challenge i decided to set my sights on the other ET napoleonic wars game , currently im at penisular war and battle of eylau with no current generals and i have several french marshals in mind looking at their skills alone , i would like your suggestions on who to buy first and tips for items , with the amount of non iap and princess french marshals i am left with 1)Berthier , napoleon's " wife " 2) Ney " the bravest of the brave " 3) Oudinot " the father of the grenadiers " 4) Grouchy " the unsuited marshal " 5)Jourdan " the victor of fleurs" 6)Lefebrve " the fighting marshal " 7) Serurier " the virgin of italy " 8)Mortier " the head of the young guard " 9)Augerau " the proud bandit " 10) Macdonald " his outspokenness " 11) Marmont " Friendship's choice " 12)Bernadotte " Crown prince of sweden " 13) Perignon " the unknown marshal " with these 13 choices kept in mind i would like your suggestions , i believe i would need one general to hybrid as a trader and perhaps keep 1 slot open till for trainers to max generals , eager for your feedback and have a great day

Are you committed to only the marshals of France or are other French generals also OK? You can check the thread "commander" for a list of French generals and then examine them. A good trader is the single most useful general in the game for two reasons: you can buy and sell items at cost and you have a huge advantage in any campaign scenario or conquest with a market. The French general that I would get is Jerome who has 3 stars. If possible I would train him twice with August I to get him up to 5 stars. For attack generals,I highly recommend starting with Dumoriez. He's a better general than any of the marshals listed, the top 5 non IAP cav general in the game. You can use him until the end. Carteux might be your best choice as an artillery general. He has the anti evasion skill siege master and engineering. Marmot is a little faster and deals more damage because of explosives but will lose whenever bombarding a city. Carteux's a little cheaper,so him with the oak wheel works. I think it's a tough road but doable. Get Jerome,Dumoriez, and Carteux. Use Jerome to buy items at a discount, owning a snare drum and a horse to share between Dumoriez and Carteux will make a big difference. That team should take you pretty far. I think winning with 4 slots will be difficult so I highly recommend buying a few more slots to make it more fun.

Berthier is also worth considering if you're willing to increase his cav stars.

In that case Ney,Grouchy,Oudinot, and Bernadotte. That gives you a top in class general at cavalry, artillery, and infantry and Bernadotte. Bernadotte can serve as your economic general and a hybrid. You should probably just buy a 2500 medal package to get started with those generals then use your campaign winnings to buy items, the horse and snare drum are the two best.

The French princess is Isabela, so you might get her. Or you want only generals? In this case you might get Davout as your artillery gen. Explosive, assault art and geography are a good combination. I wouldn't consider Grouchy.

My preferred lineup would be Ney, Marmont, Grouchy, and finish with Oudinot.
If you like another cavalry instead of infantry, replace Oudinot with Gouvion/Augereau. If you don't care about price, replace Grouchy with Berthier, make Berthier a cavalry and Ney an artillery. If you think the infantry/second cavalry is more important than the second artillery, get Oudinot/MacDonald and finish with Grouchy. Your trader will be either Ney, MacDonald, or Berthier.
BTW, Gouvion and Claude are also marshals. They are more commonly known as St-Cyr and Victor-Perrin.

When we call Grouchy bad, we are comparing him to the rest of the generals available, and we are not filling the last slot with him. Any general with Engineering plus another skill or Accurate alone is better than Grouchy in terms of quality. But since we only have the Napoleonic marshals available this time, there aren't many proper artillery generals so Grouchy can almost definitely make it into your lineup.

Grouchy is similar to Marmot because they both have engineering, which gives +2 movement. He has an additional artillery and move star so he's a better price performer. Once you get a trader you can sell your stars at a better price and use those medals to buy more generals. That's why I recommend Bernadotte first.

Bernadotte has 2 cavalry and 3 artillery stars so he can serve as a hybrid even though his skills are geared to infantry. The bigger issue is lack of a good cavalry option outside of Ney. That's why I like Dumoriez.
