But I heard that ET gives the enemies all the available talents while players struggle to unlock / upgrade them. Isn't that detrimental? Plus, I'm fairly sure the enemy's elites use tents which may negate what little dmg our troops and the gens' skills deal. Not all of them have tents, and don't forget about 10 points of moral drop with each attack. And most of the units are generic swordsmen, pikemen, archers etc and that makes their talents irrelevant while it is possible for players to hire 2-handed swordsmen in the castle who have excellent stats and talents in comparison. Thanks to stoic's advice and ET's fix, I managed to win this as a F2P, no War Drums player at last. Deployment: To the Winchester, I deployed Michael VII on the mixed legion and Nevsky on the 2× counter inf. I gave the max legion gen the lvl 3 anti-cav siege weapon for the additional +1 mobility.
In the centre, Reinforcement Robert the Bruce takes the green halo, Alfred on the 2× counter inf, Narses on the mixed legion who joined the defenders of Winchester, and Murad II on the garrison by Oxford.
Around London, Subutai (with his weapon at lvl 10) on the 2× legion with a ranged inf unit, Belisarius on the 2x elite legion who will gain a Scottish Spearman from the castle to his NE, Theodora on the 2× melee inf, and Justinian on the mixed legion.
All in all, I focused on the anti-cav siege weapon and anti-cav stakes with my war gears. Gens used: Murad II, Subutai, Michael VII, Belisarius + Narses, Justinian + Theodora, Nevsky, Alfred, and Reinforcement Robert the Bruce.
Is that how my main Epic Battles page is supposed to look? I captured Hastings and held it when I won (ignoring the fact that one must take it to win or face 2-4 full legions spammed per turn), but it looks as if this was discounted. Beat William the Conqueror by Turn 4-5, then he returned by Turn 9. Thankfully, the second wave of naval reinforcements showed by Turn 4, but I was nearly wiped out by his troops with high morale when he returned. Also, when possible send one Scottish Spearman or a swordsman to hold the castles if unable to take Hastings immediately. This reduces the spam.

Btw just fyi, the new epic battle very much doable without drums, no worries here. (Actually might be too easy to be "epic")

I'm fairly sure the enemy's Talent are a reflection of what you upgraded, maybe with a little more. Besides, if ET *gasps* bans Drums in Epic Battles and kept fairer mechanics, it'll feel more epic. Then again, Murad II and Subutai have become quite OP with enough support, better than Timur, I daresay.

Has anyone figured out the Battle of Talas (Tang) trigger for Qarluq's betrayal of Tang?
I captured Suiye, avoided the Abbasids and moved towards Shule, but while at the Shule castle, Qarluq turned on me. However, if I stood still at the starting points, Qarluq almost storms Shule before getting wiped out and they don't turn immediately. It's definitely not turn count because Qarluq would have turned in this scenario, which they did not.
Is it the number of killed Chaj legions? If I attacked towards the Abbasid horde, will delay the inevitable?
Also, still no luck with Hastings (Normandy). The English are too numerous, we are even worse off than if we fought as the English (at least they had legions for our gens and good economic base).
I get fiercely attacked upon landing and my legions are wiped out even with Murad and Subutai's active on every turn.

For the Talas, I think your hinch is correct as we kill Chaj legions we get the trigger but I dont think attacking Abbasids will delay that because their leader is the caller for trigger? Also it would be very difficult to push towards to the Abbasids while Chaj cities and forts spam legions. I am not really f2p but I try to focus more on tactical fight. This battle iş obviously hard because of the low level chinese troops we have. What I do for Qarlug is I dont push hard but position myself around Qarlug with resourceful generals like Baldwin, Yelu, Murad, Saladin(p2p), Robert. With their betrayal I try to eliminate them in 2 turns and push forward.I do also use one demoralizing generals. Normandy is nuts I think I have used maybe hundreds of drums.

I just used archer spam for Hastings Normandy but I also beat it before murad ii came in the game . I used archer spam because of large quantity of defense infantry but now I guess I could use melee cavalry to sweep the spam.

We only have so much and the English advance would easily tear down any archer formation.

When replaying with my current units it wasnt hard at all without war drums. Robert did 70% of the fighting. Subutai and murad the rest. Dmg enemy with their active, so that robert is capable to oneshot... There goes to show again that upgrading our units and not beeing able to debuff them again is terrible for replayability. the mission that was nerve-wrackingly unbalanced turned easy.

And with a good gem setup, (black prince or not) he should be able to survive the enemies attack when having a tent and clearing the enemies around him with his active after they were damaged with subutais splash. His setup was just dicussed in roberts thread. But maybe its just a differnce of unit and talent upgrades.

Easiest "Epic Battle" ever. The scales are so far tipped towards our side that no War Drums are required for a win. 0 War Drums and Talent Upgrades. Crippled the Outremer forces with lvl 7 Sepulchre, Templar and Hospitallier Knights. Although the lvl 14 Teutonic Knights (are they even supposed to be here?) and other generic troops pose a bigger threat, the Ayyubids still hold the best hand just like in history. Moreover, I crippled all Arab-Turkic troops as well with the lvl 6 Mamluks, lvl 8 elephant archers, lvl 11 Camel Archers and lvl 14 Camel Riders. Took the Outremer city in case it is required for an S rank. Gens used: - Murad II, Belisarius, Narses, Timur, Subutai, Robert the Bruce, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Alexios I, Alfred, and Reinforcement Gao Xianzhi.
On the flip side, how will I overcome the Ayyubid forces with my allies and I being so disadvantaged, I wonder.

The winds of change favour us, Commander. Duke William of Normandy was promised the throne of England which was usurped by Harold Godwinson. Let us punish the treacherous one and claim England for our king!
Gens by order of deployment: Robert the Bruce (reinforcement), Murad II (starting 2× Norman cav), Subutai (starting 2× ranged cav), Justinian (starting 2× counter inf), and Theodora (starting 2× ranged inf). Followed by Cnut (2× Viking Raiders + 1 Scottish Spearman with lvl 3 Viking Longboat), Antonina (scout cav), Eleanor of Aquitaine (Viking Raider + ranged inf, and she has 100 ranged points) and Matilda of Boulogne (with lvl 4 Calmness and Scout cav).
On William: William is allowed to take dmg when landing and taking over the starting region marked with Hastings. Once the barrier is lifted, evacuate him to sea. When he takes dmg, this leads to an event which triggers a severe morale drop (think high to low) for all our troops. He can bait two units to the NE end of the coast.
Decimate his legion. We need the population, especially later on. There's really no other use for him, IMO and he's just a liability. Even after Harold's defeat, that trigger is still in place.
Phase 1: Landing at Hastings Land everyone. I used Robert's active because I need the extra hit to take Hastings. Hold Theodora's Calmness back because we need to reactivate Robert's active right after.
William + the Forced March gen kept their transports and drew the enemy to the coast east of London. The gen attacked to cover my march on London later on. IMO, if we have enough tech, I would've given him Viking Longboats as well. Somehow, the English common troops on the coast can take multiple hits from a gen from sea.
Phase 2: Battle of Hastings / Turning the coastal flank to hit London Given that my additional troops led to an economic state of War (no income), I didn't bother to keep Justinian and Theodora close.
Using Hastings as my rear base, Theodora and the other cav gen guarded my left. Murad (full legion with scout cav added) and Robert in my centre facing Harold. Justinian (added blue swordsman) and Subutai (added Scottish unit) on my right facing the other reinforced gen. Cnut will move to destroy the enemies along the coast where the two provinces meet. Supporting gens assist and plug gaps when needed. Priority is keeping Robert in the field, followed by the Murad-Subutai duo.
Earlier advice were spot on about their decisive role. Weaken common troops for Robert to destroy and recover HP.
Note: If you tried to turn the enemy right in an overland march, Harold will move to intercept. If you broke formatio to charge towards London in a wedge from the coast, there is a small chance that Harold will move towards Hastings, but he should move to counterattack. Phase 3: All or nothing - London When you enter the province, the enemy will close in, especially the clusters around the city. The cheating English who spam troops every turn will only intensify their attacks. Hurry!
At the same time, defeating Harold and/or a timer countdown would cause the group between the western province's fort and Hastings to attack.
Form a wedge for Robert and Cnut to attack the city. Cnut had the Orban Cannon, I believe. Murad and Subutai to cripple the garrison and surrounding troops. Others to defeat the survivors of Hastings and block the enemy legions.
Upon taking London, the enemy would've surrounded you. I lost Antonina here. Defeat the immediate troops, open a gap to reach Oxford and push toward the western city.
You need to help heal Cnut and Rober to force a breakthrough. I stacked a Royal charge cav unit on Subutai and sent him with the Forced March gen (restored / replaced using Garrison Spearman, a ranged inf unit, and a War Cav because he was near the abandoned coastal castle in London's province) to assist.
Then, the rest move towards the western city once the attacks on London died down.
You'd expect that defeating Harold would be important, right? It is, if only to remove a powerful threat and feel good about defeating him. Nothing historical about his defeat here. Perhaps there is something else, but I observed no visible change. We don't have reinforcements or a large surplus of resources, unlike the Normans when playing as the English. I followed advice to boost Robert even further to 180 inf points. Still, NO War Drums or Talent Upgrades were used. However, I did restrict some troop lvls, especially blue swordsman.

Battle of Talas - Tang faction No War Drums, IAPs or Talent upgrades. Excepting lvl 13 Tang cav troops, my other forces were quite weak. I restricted upgrading the appropriate Arab / Turkish special forces. Gens used:
- Nevsky (starting unit with the counter inf and melee cav), - Alexios I (melee cav with melee inf starting unit), - Alfred (charge cav-mixed legion starting unit), - Robert the Bruce (mixed inf + 1 ranged legion) - Subutai (Reinforcement - Tang charge cav, Mongolian Raiders, and Timur's special unit) - Theodora (archers) - Murad (melee cav) - Gao Xianzhi (reinforcement Tang charge cav + 2 Tang melee cav) - Justinian (reinforcement ranged cav + 2× ranged inf unit) - Eleanor of Aquitaine (same as Justinian, but she has 100 ranged points)
Knowing that the number of Chaj troops defeated is the trigger, we have to prepare for the betrayal of our "allies", Qarluq. Additionally, defeating the Chaj troops will not trigger a defection, meaning that we'll have to storm the Da Luosi ourself. It is possible to take An and all Abbasid cities before beating the stage.
Strategy: I sent Subutai to take Qarluq's conquest. By luck, they defected when their city was left empty. The rest will follow the expected clockwise path of taking the city in front of us, the southern city, the secondary target city, and the final Chaj city. Tactical deployment:
Justinian and Robert held the line by the starting city. The rest attacked. With Subutai's assistance, Nevsky and Alfred barely took the southern city without falling. When the Arab gens attack, you need someone to screen the northern end of the mountain range which flanks the valley. The rest should swap weak troops, change war gears (I used two lvl 3 tents), or stack troops. Gather at the westernmost castle. Defeating the ultimate Arab commander, the guy who had starting dialogue, will lead to a morale drop. Unsure if Chaj is affected but since the Chaj commander had high morale, Chaj troops might not have been affected. Use of Subutai and Murad managed to cripple most of the enemy forces heading to the southern city. Robert performed well to defeat those advancing towards the starting city. Create a bulk at the western castle of the southern province. Use it to shield Alfred and supporting units to take An. Justianian and Robert to move westward. Subutai and Murad confronted the Chaj commander and beat him, causing a morale drop for their forces. For extra insurance, I took the last Abbasid city. [/spoiler] Note: Given that the ranged inf unit was the cheapest, I spammed some in support.
