I have completed all 3 of his battles and I can currently afford him. However, I question the wisdom in getting a second artillery general as early as I am. Only in the Pacific era, and my generals are Leeb and Messe. Should I get Konev now or wait to buy someone like Guderian? I have ~1800 medals.

Not an easy question to answer. Konev is one of the best Art generals in the game. Imo, there is no big difference between him and Zhukov... But to get two Art generals in a row... I don't know. You need a good Panzer General more than another Artillery guy.

I knew this would come up, and I have to say I don't like Vatutin. I don't want to spend 1800 medals on a general I'm not committed to.

In case Vatutin is not good enough for You there are not so many alternatives. Either save for Guderian or Rokossovskiy. But Rokossovskiy will not be much better than Vatutin. And he will require more medals. Rommel is not easy to get and he will need even bigger investments to match Vatutin and Rokossovskiy. One more alternative is a hybrid general.. but in case You don't like Vatutin I doubt Timoshenko or Graziani will be good variants...

If you are in doubts - buy Guderian. Earn some medals here and there, dismiss Messe, and I think you can afford him.
p.s. imo, Vatutin is one of the best (if not the best) generals in the game in terms price/quality...

I bought konev as 1st general and i must say I rather had bought guderian first! konev is in the end a good general but guderian made my day.. so if I were you i would get guderian and lateron konev

Is it hard to unlock konev to -40%? I currently only have Messe and 1700 medals, otherwise I can buy konev maybe first

Path I am trying to complete: Messe-Guderian-Konev-Vatutin-Yamamoto-On and on... As Singlemalt says arty is very vulnerable. Messe then Guderian or Vatutin then Guderian seems very good. Then buy Konev to assist Guderian. Though you can buy Konev right now I think you can grind towards the fast Heinz. Just do dominations(Invasions etc). Do Konev missions if you wish to get medals though I would advise you to get Guderian. That's what I&most of the EFC recommends.

I'm already gaining lots of medals, I'm up to 2,200 now. Getting an S rank on 1943 gives 500 as well I think. Or maybe it's 300? Clearing hard mode for Europe campaign gives 300. Guderian is definitely in reach within the next week or so.
