So is Mannerheim a better choice than Rundstedt? I am thinking about getting an infantry gen I would say so. He starts off pretty far ahead compared to the other infantry generals that he compares to, those being Yamashita and Rundstedt, and Rundstedt has freakin elastic defense. That when you know a general kind of sucks. However, Yamashita is overall better as he can get both guerrilla and inf leader, where Mannerheim only gets one of the two skills Mannerheim has Elastic Defense. In all seriousness, Mannerheim will start off better, but Gerd von Rundstedt will eventually be better, as well as being 400 medals cheaper than Rundstedt. Yama is a tad better than Rundstedt with movement rather than air, but also a thousand medals more expensive.

I prioritize inf. in all ET games, so, I might be a bit biased, but I prefer Rundstedt to someone with the likes of Konev. He is past Rommel and almost to Guderian. I use inf for taking cities, and air to pummel them. Guderian is pretty much just (in my mind) cheap and powerful air. That can die.

Inf are for taking cities or stabbing, tanks are just powerful punchers.

Anyway, MacArthur is so much better, and if you want someone cheaper, just get Vasilevsky, who is so much better than Mannerheim...

If you want the best inf general Yamashita is the best if you want a cheap one then get Rundsted, but Mannerheim's really good if you want a cheap high damaging general, because he's got raider already at lvl 3 while Rundsted doesn't have raider at all. And Mannerheim is a Colonel and has lvl 3 Jungle fighting.

Yes he can be an alternative to Yamashita/Rundstedt but his trash skill in Elastic Defense.

Elastic defense is bad but Mannerheim already has lvl 3 raider and jungle fighting which makes him deal alot of damage even without upgrading. Getting and upgrading raider to lvl 3 and of course buying Rundsted is gonna be more expensive than just getting Mannerheim. I mean that Rundsted and Yamashita have much more potential than Mannerheim but if you want a pretty good infantry general for cheap then I think Mannerheim is a great option.

If you only buy generals because they're cheap you're gonna regret it in the end game. I buy Rundstedt not because he's cheap, but because he could have 5 air force stars which would come in handy since infantries are weak and would sometimes be put on a city to heal. And honestly, I also like him because he's German lol. Otherwise I'd buy Yamashita; Mannerheim could only have either rumor, guerrilla, or infantry leader on his empty slot.
