Well, they are two cheapest generals on the game. The majority of tasks at the start of the game require 2 generals. Besides, Cerar's Crowd tactics is one level higher than that of Messe and it was my first medal that improved it by 50%. And later in the Warzone I used two of them in Infantry trial. My average result was 300 points, I still can't consistently repeat it with only one Rundstedt. So, there is definitely safety in numbers. If we buy Bastico on day 2 and unlock Pavlov on day 3 we need rather Infantry generals rather than Messe. Then as I've said, Tito-Crerar-Bastico only costs 400 fewer than Guderian. Your 1600 argument doesn't stand. Even if it does, it means Guderian path can also start with ~1200. Let's be more practical in our discussion. We need at least 5 generals to unlock War zone. And we need a team to beat Events on normal. When in your theory a player is able to do both if he starts the game with purchasing Guderian? Who are your hypothetical first 5 generals? When a player can in your theory farm 2 Ribbons instead of one? Just to compare... I started the game on January 24 And here is January 27 According to my diary ( european-war-4.boards.net/thread/19372/budget-team?page=2 ) I had 6 generals on January 27 after 4 days of actual playing: Tito, Cerar, Bastico, Konev, Pavlov, Mikava. I started to farm 2 Ribbons on day 7 (when Rundstedt and Horton were added to the team). Since it is possible to some extent "choose" the Ribbons we get in Warzone, I can have at least one Honor Ribbon for my tank generals per run. Isn't this something we should have taken into consideration as well when we plan our first steps?

Good thing you pointed out the "Colonel" requirement for starter pass, this means another 300-500 medals unless we buy someone who already has the rank. Are there any alternatives to Bastico given that Pavlov and Rommel will follow shortly? Well, actually there is a solution if someone doesn't want to buy Bastico. It works with every general within Bastico's price range. Let's say someone purchases Vatutin as his first medal general and then unlocks 40% discount for Konev and purchases him. So, every general should work provided he helps us to obtain 40% discount for Konev. Last but not least we should have 1600 medals in reserve (or to earn it soon after that). But I think that having 3 Tank generals at the start isn't "too much". It's because of Warzone. We have exactly 3 tanks there in Steel Warzone. Two in the Tank mission and one in the final battle. And farming Steel Warzone is of paramount importance for a new player because out of 6 Ribbons there 3 are Honor Ribbons including the most important I see, war zone = tank zone and it's also interesting that you see this mode as the most important one (meaning that campaign, conquest and events are either easier or too difficult). And it is indeed the only place where we can (more or less reliably) get large quantities of specific ribbons.
Looking through the silver tier, Vatutin is the only general that satisfies the requirements of being a tanker, 1800 medals initial cost and end game potential. Do you have any tank mobility ribbons yet? And if yes, how much?

3 of them (lvl 1) were given as log-in gifts... I think that all 3 Tank generals in the silver tier have an endgame potential (Vatutin, Bastico, List). Vatutin has more stars but Bastico's skills are more upgraded. And List has lvl 3 of one of the most expensive skills (Blitzkrieg). And, yes, I see Honor Ribbons plus Leader skills as an excellent (and "budget" ) way to increase the overall performance. I already have lvl 3 Honor Ribbons on Rommel, Arnold and Rundstedt. My best result in Steel Warzone was 1624 points, so I am close to farm 3 Ribbons per run. I guess I'll stay here for a while, at least until my needs are satisfied.

I didn't know where to ask a generic question, so I'll ask here, since it's an active thread: I read somwhere here in the forum that explosives doesn't work with air generals. Is it still true? And is it true for both land generals and generals on a carrier?

And is it true for both land generals and generals on a carrier? It doesn't work with air attack, not with air gen. Any air attack from any gen with explosive won't trigger the explosive effect

Another generic question. A general with no leader skill can't do critical hits, right?

Yes, I make a save before the last battle and if I am not content with results I reload. Priority is given to Honor Ribbons.

Another generic question. A general with no leader skill can't do critical hits, right? Actually he can. I equipped Pavlov (he still doesn't have PL) with Honor Ribbon and he performs critical hits occasionally. But without a specific sound of PL Just red attacks. But obviously it's best to combine the two (Leader skills and Honor Ribbons) together for better results.

stoic Getting Darlan in early game isn't easy but should be possible. Do occupying cities, allying neutral countries, 1 level of speed running, and 5 non-Germany European Axis countries. Take advantage of Germany. You have proven 1 level of speed running is doable with no general and minimal tech using Hungary. So there're 2 problems left: how to prevent Germany from having more than 21 cities (221 cities in total in 1939), and how to defeat Germany when we fail to do so. The best country to do that is one of Italy, Romania, or Spain because of their Air Force tech tree.

I think that beating a Germany with more than 21 cities is always easy if we already own the rest of the world and have missiles available (which shouldn't be a problem in an ally all & conquer all run).

I just completed Japan in 44 turns and decided to use my cloud save to wipe everyone else and to conquer the whole map. Unfortunately my save file was erased (leaving me empty-handed) but I definitely could smash any opponent including Germany. I didn't know WC had same problems with conquest saves as EW7 and GCS do. Nevermind It was an experimental run anyway.

Actually, it was significantly easier than I anticipated. In fact, we need to play only 3 conquests to unlock Darlan: 1. Any of 1* Axis states. Hungary or Finland should be just fine. The main task is to make allies out of all neutral countries. 2. Empire of Japan. It is the easiest (well, I haven't played others, truth be told ) 3* state. The main objective is to conquer all cities. It looks terrifying to fight with Germans, but it is rather a psychological fear than factual. jonblend is right when you unlock Rockets/Strategic bombings no-one is of a threat anymore. 2. Any 2* country. Romania is very close to Hungary, so the same "Rascal" strategy is possible. The aim is just to grab what carelessly left by others and to complete it under 60 turns. So, my conclusion is that we don't need to purchase another Admiral at the start of the game beside free ones - Darlan and Horton. Erich von Manstein was right about the relative ease with which Darlan is unlocked. Technologies and generals we deploy in conquests can be helpful, but not necessary to complete 3 conquest mentioned above. My Technologies are of a Pacific war period mostly.
